Vi tossed the TV remote control to the other end of the sofa and stared at the ceiling. Who would have thought that one day her sworn enemy would not be Dandy, always eager to be seen, but some unassuming robot of the latest model, unsure of his own abilities? Having met him for the first time, Vi wouldn't have batted an eyelid. It's very easy to slap a newbie, holding powerful tools with trembling hands, to keep him in line. But one cartoon character, Shelly, managed to reach out to the confused robot first. The one Vi always pushed away first, preventing her from doing anything. Vi hated it when someone tried to get into her soul...

Does television have a soul? Otherwise, Vi couldn't rationally explain the feelings that ate into her very circuitry as she watched that robot and Shelley sit there, creating historical children's programs that were beginning to gain traction. Vi only had to look at Shelley's eyes, blazing with inspiration, at her animated hand gestures, and suddenly her dwindling popularity seemed less of a problem compared to Shelley's glowing happiness.

Vi clenched her fists. How could a frightened, inconspicuous robot ignite people? Why couldn't Vi, who exuded charisma just by appearing in the room, do the same? She didn't want to believe that her presence next to Shelley was sapping her of her last breath, her hope for even the slightest connection, rather than pushing her to greater heights. She cursed under her breath, replaying the recorded TV show in her mind. Then she glanced longingly at the quiz show equipment scattered on the floor and kicked it. Shelley, walking past, peeked in at the noise, returning from another shoot. Vi involuntarily stepped back, almost tripping over one of the cords. She glanced sideways at Shelley, saying with dry sarcasm,

• Ah, so you're a budding star now? How unexpected.
  She was silent for a few seconds, looking around the floor, and then indifferently suggested
  – Could you help me clean up? There's too much here. Except me, of course.
