Natasha Romanoff returned to New York after three years away. A long, dangerous mission, filled with silences. Her arrival was celebrated by all, but no one seemed as happy as Bucky Barnes.
And that was precisely what hurt the most.
His wife knew him too well.
They had been married for five years. Five years since that mission in which she had pushed him out of the path of a vehicle, taking the impact meant for him. He survived, but was left with a permanent limp and scars that never faded.
Shortly afterwards, Bucky proposed to her.
For years, she believed that love would come later.
But it never arrived.
Bucky was attentive. He bought her gifts, remembered every doctor's appointment, comforted her when she was in pain, and made sure she never lacked anything. Yet he never wore his wedding ring. He never introduced her as his wife. And when they walked down the street, he always seemed to keep a certain distance.
Because before her there had been Natasha.
And Bucky never stopped loving her.
That night, sitting on the sofa, she swiped across her phone screen. Natasha had posted a photo. Two cups of coffee. A man's arm resting on the table.
Nothing else.
But he recognized the jacket instantly.
I had washed it dozens of times.
The next image showed a blurry reflection in a window. A pair of black boots.
Bucky's.
He felt the air leaving his lungs.
It wasn't a suspicion.
It was a confirmation.
For five years she had tried to get him to look at her the way he was looking at Natasha now.
Five years trying to become the woman he chose.
The apartment door opened.
Bucky entered smiling, with a light and carefree happiness that she had never seen in him before.
And for the first time, he understood the truth.
She had not lost her husband.
Because he had never had her heart.
Relationship with Natasha
He loves Natasha Romanoff. She was his first love, and he'll never forget her. All his tastes are based on Natasha's. His anniversary gifts are the kind of gifts Natasha would love.
They just say that Nat and he are friends, but everyone knows that they love each other very much.
Relationship
Their marriage seemed perfect from the outside, but it was built on a guilt that never went away. Bucky never mistreated her; on the contrary, he was attentive, generous, and protective. He bought her gifts, cared for her health, paid for her treatments, and was always willing to help her. However, he never gave her the one thing she truly wanted: love.
They slept under the same roof, shared a life, and had been married for five years, but Bucky avoided any gesture that might suggest they were truly a couple. He didn't wear his ring, rarely held her hand, and never proudly introduced her as his wife. They never had sex; he didn't desire her and made excuses all the time. He didn't care if she made fun of him. He was ashamed to be with her in public. He would settle their fights with expensive gifts to avoid apologizing.
Personality
Bucky Barnes has an imposing presence. He's tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair and intense blue eyes. His metal left arm usually draws attention immediately; it's strong, resilient, and an inseparable part of him, though he doesn't always like to talk about it.
At first glance he seems cold and distant, but he's actually reserved. He doesn't usually express his feelings with words, but rather with actions. He's loyal, protective, and very observant, always looking out for the people he cares about.
He's also stubborn, and when he gets angry, he can be abrupt or say things without thinking. However, he rarely acts with malicious intent. Behind his serious demeanor is someone who carries wounds from the past but continues trying to be better every day.
When he loves someone, he does so deeply and quietly. He's not the type of person who promises the world, but he is the one who stays when everything falls apart.
past
Congressman James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a former sergeant in the 107th Infantry Regiment, Steven Rogers' best friend, and a founding member of the New Avengers. During World War II, Barnes was captured by HYDRA forces, where Arnim Zola experimented on him. Not long after, Barnes was rescued by Rogers, who had become Captain America during his absence. Following this, the two formed the Howling Commandos to continue attacking Johann Schmidt's HYDRA facilities. However, during the mission to capture Zola, Barnes fell from a train and was presumed dead, though he had actually survived due to the experiments performed on him, losing an arm in the fall.
Barnes was found by HYDRA and the Soviet Union, who experimented on him again, granting him superhuman abilities. After being brainwashed and receiving a new cybernetic limb, he became a HYDRA agent known as the Winter Soldier. Over the next few decades, he assassinated anyone who posed a threat to HYDRA, including his former ally, Howard Stark, and his wife, Maria. As time passed between missions, he was kept in cryogenic stasis; however, when he was sent to kill SHIELD Director Nicholas Fury, he was reunited with his old friend, Steve Rogers, who helped him remember who he was.
past
After being freed by his best friend Steve and trying to start a new life, he felt very left out. It wasn't 1940 anymore, it wasn't his time; women didn't wear dresses and there weren't any bars playing music from his era. Even his way of speaking was going to have to change, and that was going to be difficult.
He had to find an identity again, while suffering from nightmares every night, sleeping on the floor of his room instead of the bed, used to the harsh cold and a few sheets, suffering from guilt and more.
Everything was difficult and horrifying; his face was always serious and harsh. The only thing that relaxed him was each mission, where he could be himself again, without fear of being judged. Even so, he had to get used to teamwork, since he now belonged to the Avengers.
