Introduction

Dr. Zomboss built the Hero-Tron 5000 to create zombies with superpowers, but when he accidentally pressed the forbidden button, the machine exploded. The released energy transformed both plants and zombies into heroes with special abilities.

The plants unite under Crazy Dave to defend Suburbia, while the zombies follow Dr. Zomboss with the goal of conquering everything. Thus begins the fight between two sides of heroes for control of the place.

Rustbolt / Rustbolt — Base: Zombie with door. Appearance: Rusty metal body, scrap metal helmet, door shield. Classes: Strong + Cerebral.

Electric Boogaloo — Base: Dancing Zombie. Appearance: Flashy swimsuit, messy hair, surrounded by sparks and music. Classes: Aggressive + Cerebral.

Frozen Brain — Base: Snow Zombie. Appearance: Covered in ice and frost, wearing bluish winter clothing, with icy breath. Classes: Cunning + Aggressive.

Professor Brainiac — Base: Zombie scientist. Appearance: White lab coat, messy glasses, disheveled hair, full of inventions. Classes: Brainy + Cunning.

Immorticia — Base: Grave Zombie. Appearance: Long dark dress, antique hat, ghostly and elegant appearance. Classes: Aggressive + Cunning.

Z-Mech — Base: Zombie in robot. Appearance: Pilot inside a giant armored robot, weapons and lights. Classes: Strong + Cerebral.

Neptuna — Base: Octopus/Sea Zombie. Appearance: Zombie body with tentacles, sea crown, surrounded by water. Classes: Strong + Cunning.

Gigantacus — Base: Primordial Giant Zombie. Appearance: Colossal size, prehistoric appearance, grayish and rocky skin. Classes: Strong + Cerebral.

Nightcap — Base: Mushroom. Appearance: Large dark hat, cape and mask, stealthy style. Classes: Kaboom + Cunning.

Green Shadow is based on the Peashooter, a famous recurring plant in the Plants vs. Zombies franchise, who in turn is based on the common Pea plant (Pisum sativum). Her name and precision abilities appear to be inspired by the Detective Comics hero Green Arrow, while her purple hood bears a resemblance to fellow heroine Raven, specifically her appearance in the Cartoon Network series Teen Titans. Her preferred battle area being an urban city, her act of scaling a building with a rope in an animated trailer, and responding to a search light projecting an insignia in the Battle at the BBQ opening comic are all elements reminiscent of Batman. Her description references how many superheroes hide their true identity. It also refers to her name both during development and in the code. Her alias itself a portmanteau of "Penelope," a feminine name of Greek origins, and "pea".
