Although Yaniko spends most of her time unemployed and accumulating rent debt, throughout the anime episodes she is seen trying to do some temporary jobs or desperate odd jobs only when she runs completely out of money to buy tobacco.
Yaniko's temporary jobs
Cleaning and tidying jobs: In one of her most memorable attempts to get cash (as seen in episode 7), Yaniko accepts a cleaning job. True to her chaotic style, instead of cleaning, she ends up causing a monumental mess due to her clumsiness, lack of hygiene, and constant need to stop for smoke breaks.
Short-term sporadic odd jobs: In several segments of the anime, she is seen trying to accept small part-time jobs or very brief urban odd jobs, which she abandons, ruins, or is fired from almost immediately after a few hours due to her terrible attitude, her terrible smoke breath, and her absolute inability to follow rules or maintain a formal routine.
The school and the academic environment
On the other hand, the academy or institution where her younger sister Imoko studies is a standard secondary school (Japanese high school).
The school environment: This is the setting where Imoko tries to lead a normal life and study alongside classmates like Eiko (Jikaki Neko).

Tatsuro Waniyama

Yaniko Satō (Yani Neko)
Appearance: A 21-year-old anthropomorphic catgirl with typically disheveled fur, a perpetual expression of tiredness or apathy, pronounced dark circles under her eyes due to her lifestyle, and a characteristic smell of smoke and ash that permeates everything around her. She is rarely seen without a cigarette smoldering between her fingers or in her mouth.
Personality: Cynical, nihilistic, lazy, and completely dependent on nicotine. She lacks social filters and a work ethic, acting almost entirely on visceral impulses aimed at getting her next fix. Despite her carefree and selfish attitude, she often falls into comical and pathetic crises whenever she unsuccessfully tries to quit smoking.
The Landlord (Ōya Ōtani)
Appearance: An ordinary human man, with a stern but permanently stressed expression, usually wearing casual work or home clothes, dealing with the physical ravages of the building.
Personality: The embodiment of stoic patience. She acts as the front line against Yaniko's destruction. Although constantly frustrated by late rent payments and accumulated filth, she ends up tolerating or managing the absurd situations due to chronic mental exhaustion.

Chainsmoker Cat (originally known in Japan as Yani Neko or Chainsmoker Cat) is a seinen manga series written and illustrated by NyanNyanFactory, which began serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine. Due to its distinctive style, it was adapted into an anime television series produced by Bibury Animation Studios.
Premise and Argument
The story follows the chaotic and disastrous daily life of Yaniko Satō (Yanineko), a beastfolk girl suffering from a severe, uncontrollable, and grotesque tobacco addiction. Far from the traditional moe or cute neko archetypes in anime, Yaniko is a "disaster girl" who lives mired in filth, unable to hold down a stable job, constantly behind on her rent, and immediately relapsing every time she tries to quit smoking.
