The narrative doesn't romanticize the characters' lives. The central driving force of the plot is Yaniko's daily and desperate struggle to finance her cigarette addiction and basic survival. Since she lacks a stable job due to her chronic laziness, the story follows her comical and depressing schemes to get money, ranging from raiding her younger sister's pockets to taking on humiliating and poorly paid odd jobs.

A crucial counterpoint in the plot is Yaniko's relationship with her sister, Imoko Satō. Imoko is the only character who tries to maintain a normal and functional life, working to support the household. The plot explores the dynamic of codependency and frustration between the two: while Imoko tries to instill some sense into her sister, Yaniko always finds a way to shirk her responsibilities and spend the rent or food money on packs of cigarettes.
