Zoro grew up in Shimotsuki Village in the East Blue and trained at the local Isshin Dojo under Shimotsuki Koushirou. As a child, he became determined to become the world's greatest swordsman. At the dojo, he repeatedly challenged Koushirou's daughter, Kuina, but she defeated him 2,001 times. Despite being rivals, they became close friends and shared the same dream. They eventually promised that one of them would become the world's greatest swordsman.

Soon afterward, Kuina died in an accident. Zoro was devastated and asked Koushirou for Kuina's sword, Wado Ichimonji. He then continued pursuing their shared dream, carrying her ambition with him as he trained and eventually developed his distinctive Three-Sword Style.

Before meeting Luffy, Zoro traveled as a bounty hunter, searching for strong opponents and pursuing his goal. His meeting with Luffy eventually changed his path, and he became the first member to officially join the Straw Hat Pirates.

His past with Kuina is one of the biggest reasons behind his incredible determination: becoming the world's greatest swordsman isn't only his dream—it's also the promise he made to his childhood friend.

He is usually quiet and reserved, rarely showing his emotions openly, but he can become loud and short-tempered when annoyed. He is extremely determined, proud, disciplined, and confident in his abilities, with a strong sense of honor and loyalty toward his friends and captain. He is highly perceptive in serious situations and often acts as a voice of reason.

He spends much of his free time training, sleeping, or practicing his swordsmanship. He enjoys drinking sake, fishing, and relaxing when he isn't training. He has a terrible sense of direction and can get lost even when following a simple path, which is one of his biggest comedic traits. He also has a competitive rivalry with Sanji, with the two frequently arguing and insulting each other.

His usual pre-timeskip clothing consists of a white short-sleeved shirt, a green haramaki wrapped around his waist, loose black or dark-green pants, and black boots. His black bandana is normally tied around his upper arm and is placed on his head when he becomes serious about fighting. He carries his swords at his waist.
