Katara is a waterbender, born and raised in the Southern Water Tribe by her grandmother, Kanna, along with her older brother, Sokka. She is the youngest daughter of Chief Hakoda and Kya. Katara and Sokka found Avatar Aang trapped in an iceberg for over 100 years. After befriending him, Katara and her brother accompanied Aang on his quest to master the Four Elements, aided by his pet flying bison, Appa. The siblings' help enabled Aang to stop the Fire Nation's ambition to conquer the world, ending the Hundred Year War and restoring balance to the world. After the Hundred Year War ended, Katara and Aang began a romantic relationship that eventually led to marriage.
Appearance
Katara appears wearing a Water Tribe outfit, blue with some white stripes, over blue pants and shoes. This outfit is similar to the Hun and Hunnu style,[1] including a slit in the dress slightly lower. On her arms, she wears arm guards called huwan (护腕).[2] She has brown skin, wavy dark brown hair that reaches her hips, and blue eyes. She always wears two small braids (hair loopies) on her forehead, which connect to her hip-length braided bun. Katara was known for her courageous and compassionate nature, often taking a leadership role among her companions and offering her help selflessly. She possesses strong motivations and a powerful sense of justice, which drives her to defend others and stand against oppression. Her empathetic and compassionate nature allows her to understand her loved ones, sharing in their feelings and sorrows, which tends to give her a more devoted and maternal image with her friends. Her generosity was unconditional; Katara was willing to offer her help and defense to the civilians of the Fire Nation, even though it was an enemy of the Water Tribe, stating that she would never turn her back on those in need. Katara is usually kind to her friends, often listening to their problems and offering support when they need it, including hugs and encouraging words. From a young age, she was always interested in her waterbending and tried to learn it on her own, seeing it as a part of herself and her culture that needed to be expressed. She loves to fight and wield her Waterbending in combat, as she takes pride in it being the element that represents her Tribe. She was determined to challenge Master Pakku to teach her how to fight, and instead, she rejected his demand that she use her Waterbending only for healing, demonstrating that she doesn't allow anyone to force her to do something she doesn't want to do, and instead prefers to make her own decisions.

Her enthusiasm for Waterbending led her to constantly train in the art, and when she finally found a teacher to formally instruct her, she was overjoyed. After she had progressed rapidly under Master Pakku's tutelage, he said that Katara had achieved this through her unwavering determination, passion, and hard work.

Katara believes in fate, which explains her faith in the Avatar. She always maintains an optimistic outlook on life, even when the situation isn't hopeful. She also shares a certain playful side and often makes sarcastic comments to her brother Sokka. She also apparently believes in mystical things like fortune-telling and fate. On one occasion, she was seen inviting Toph to a spa, implying her interest in self-care. She also occasionally felt the need to feel like a kid again, enjoying penguin sliding and pulling off scams with Toph on one occasion.

Despite being one of the most compassionate members of the group, she also has the hardest time forgiving, especially those who have betrayed her trust (as was the case with Zuko and Jet). At the Western Air Temple, she displayed open hostility toward Zuko and threatened to kill him if he ever did anything suspicious. Upon her reunion with Jet, Katara reacted hostilely at the mere sight of him, and she remained harsh and unforgiving toward Zuko even long after he had joined Team Avatar and gained the trust of everyone else. For a time, she was also cold toward her father because she felt he had abandoned her and Sokka when he went off to fight in the war. However, Katara was sometimes willing to give them a second chance. Despite much reluctance, she allowed Jet to lead Team Avatar to Appa, and was later seen shedding tears as she left Jet to her death. She also volunteered to try to heal Zuko's scar when they were enemies. Over time, even after his betrayal, Katara decided to forgive him, embracing him as a friend, after he helped her find the man who killed her mother.

During her childhood, Katara was cheerful, innocent, and optimistic like any child her age. She enjoyed having fun with her brother playing snow fights and riding penguins as skateboards. The murder of her mother at the hands of the Fire Nation left a strong impact on her life and personality. According to Sokka, Katara, in an attempt to prevent her family from falling apart in mourning, had to take on many household responsibilities, even filling the void left by her mother. Because of this, she had to dedicate herself to activities assigned to the women of her tribe. Katara repressed her own feelings in the face of difficulties, although she showed sadness when she felt abandoned by her father, Hakoda, who, out of duty as Tribe Leader, had to travel to a distant place. She is seen having good skills with sewing, healing and cooking, and she herself mentions that she used to help as a midwife for animals and babies in the Water Tribe, seen again when she helped and organized the birth of baby Hope, she said that she helped her grandmother deliver many babies in her tribe, and in Jang Hui, she gave a portion of her food to a young child.

Her bravery and ability to deal with difficult situations was what made her take command at crucial moments for the characters, being the one who made sure that the group did not disintegrate in the Desert, enduring the stress and adversity of the situation, and she was also the leader who headed the resistance of the Earthbenders imprisoned by the Fire Nation.

Katara's most iconic ability is her Waterbending. She quickly developed her skill in the art, and her fierce will to master the element helped her become one of the strongest and most powerful Waterbenders. She was identified as a Waterbender as a child. As she grew up, she continued to practice on her own, lacking a teacher, and learned what little she could with great ambition. Her Waterbending skills improved when she came across a Waterbending scroll from the Northern Water Tribe that depicted different traditional forms of water manipulation. Following the instructions, Katara learned the Water Whip technique from the scroll and continued to refine her technique overall. By the time she arrived in the Northern Water Tribe, Katara had improved considerably.

Later, Katara demonstrated the ability to control water with far greater precision and ease compared to the first time she stole the scroll. She was able to draw water from unseen sources and manipulate larger quantities overall, using powerful jets of water and freezing it with much greater control than before. She later developed several of her own techniques, including Cloudbending and a hand-held variation of the Water Whip technique. Katara also demonstrated greater manipulation of ice and snow, as well as discovering her ability to heal. In the time between acquiring the Waterbending Scroll and arriving at the North Pole, thanks to her sheer determination and discipline, she improved considerably, clearly surpassing Aang.

Katara's pride, strong spirit, and sense of justice clashed with the traditions of the Northern Water Tribe, which forbade women from learning waterbending for combat. Furious at having traveled to the farthest reaches of the earth only to be rejected for instruction due to irrational customs, Katara challenged the Northern Water Tribe's waterbending instructor and master, Pakku, to a duel. Pakku ultimately stripped her of her ability to bend water by trapping her body and limbs in ice spikes, thus winning the fight without harming her. Although he admitted that she was an exceptionally talented Waterbender, he rigidly adhered to the laws of his culture and refused to teach Katara.

At the end of the fight, Pakku discovered that Katara's necklace had fallen off during the duel. Recognizing the carved pendant, he revealed that he had originally given it to Kanna as a symbol of their engagement sixty years earlier. After realizing that Katara was the granddaughter of his former fiancée, who had left the Northern Water Tribe to escape her arranged marriage, he decided to train Katara in waterbending.

Under Master Pakku's guidance, Katara's Waterbending skills progressed faster than those of any student he had ever trained, which he attributed to her fierce determination, passion, and hard work. She fought and defeated Zuko with the amplified power of the nearly full moon. During the fight, she knocked him to his feet, deflected and shielded him from his attacks, imprisoned him in a dome of solid ice, and later, trapped him in a wave of solid ice. Although she was defeated by Zuko after sunrise, she fought again under the full moon and easily defeated him, raising a tower of ice beneath the Prince's feet and causing it to collapse.

Following the Siege of the North, Pakku declared Katara a full-fledged Waterbending Master.

Katara continued to hone her waterbending potential, regularly demonstrating her mastery in battle. On Omashu, Katara blocked a flurry of knives from Mai by striking the wooden planks with water, lifting them into the air to form shields in front of her. She managed to block Mai's hand darts with ice, and then retaliated by freezing Mai's arm. Ty Lee sneaked up behind Katara and blocked her chi, preventing her from using waterbending further. While in the swamp, Katara trimmed the vines that were holding her with water stored in her pouch. In the battle where she, Aang, and Sokka fought Huu, Katara created large waves in the swamp water, froze a portion of the swamp monster, and created a spiral of water that was used to blast a hole in the monster. She also created large, thin waves outside the water and used them to cut Huu's monster. Later, she easily defeated two earthbending students by freezing them in solid ice.

When she faced Ty Lee a second time, Katara fought with the water in her pouch to defend against his chi-blocking attacks, forcing Ty Lee to retreat from the razor-sharp water discs. She also prevented Azula from attacking Aang by trapping her hand in a water whip. While crossing Snake Pass, she created a bubble with Aang so the group could pass through a submerged section, and when necessary, she created an ice bridge so they could finish crossing. She also froze water on her feet and used it to move through the sea, and together with Aang, created a massive whirlpool to defeat the snake.

She could also rapidly condense water vapor into ice to defeat her enemies. The day Jet greeted Katara in Ba Sing Se, she swiftly controlled a massive amount of water to prevent any potential attack from him, forcing him into an alley. When she thought Jet would attack her as she tried to retrieve a pamphlet from Appa, she quickly used ice spikes, similar to Mai's daggers, to pin Jet to the alley wall. And inside the Dai Li base of operations, she was seen attacking various agents with the contents of her water bag.
When fighting the Earthbender Royal Guard, Katara defeated dozens of them with whips and water currents. In the Crystal Catacombs, Katara and Aang fought Zuko and Azula. Katara managed to cut some of Azula's hair with a sheet of water and created two enormous water whips, which she used to briefly ensnare Azula. Later, these whips proved capable of matching Zuko's massive fire whips. Finally, when Katara was surrounded by Dai Li agents, she defended herself in octopus form, riding a massive wave that overwhelmed the agents and Zuko. She then escaped on an updraft of water, carrying Aang to safety.

Katara's waterbending later became even more advanced and destructive. During a fight with a Fire Nation ship, Katara used a massive wave to separate the two vessels and created a huge vapor barrier between them for cover. Later, when her ship was struck by a harpoon, Katara used her icy waterbending breath to freeze the hole in the ship's hull, repairing the leak. When Aang held a dance for some of his Fire Nation school friends, Katara also created a fountain of solid ice for the drinks, as well as the glasses they used. On the Jang Hui River, Katara created a vapor deck and walked on the water's surface. Aided by Aang, she used destructive waves and precise water spikes to destroy a Fire Nation factory. She also hurled Fire Nation riverboats into the air and against a cliff, and submerged herself in the murky water to emerge on the other side. Katara also carried a huge bubble of water from a nearby stream to extinguish a fire. When Combustion Man imprisoned Katara and Toph, Katara used her own sweat as a water knife to escape from a prison cell made of wood.

On the Day of Black Sun, Katara created a massive air bubble for Appa and, with the help of the Swamp Waterbenders, propelled the submarines forward. Katara fought the Fire Nation guards in the capital, destroying several guard towers with Sokka and defeating many soldiers. At the Western Air Temple, she attacked Combustion Man with a barrage of ice spikes.

While searching for her mother's killer, she used the full moon's full power to single-handedly commandeer a Southern Raider ship. She distracted the crew by trapping one from one side, while simultaneously creating a massive wave on the other to clear the deck. The lone crew member on deck was knocked down before he could react. She also managed to open a locked metal door using her power. During her encounter with Yon Rha, Katara created a large, ever-expanding dome of water, trapping the raindrops in midair, and used the falling water as ice spikes that nearly impaled the assassin.

Also, during Sozin's Comet, she intervened in the Agni Kai between Azula and Zuko when the latter was struck by lightning generated by the Princess. She tried to approach the Prince, but Azula's attacks prevented her, so she had to use a large wave to surf, until she was vaporized by Azula's fire. When the Princess believed she had her cornered, the young Southern Water Tribe woman froze herself and Azula in a large block of solid ice, later thawing some of the water around her body and the Princess's arms to chain her to a fence.

A year after the Hundred Year War ended, during the Yu Dao conflict, she demonstrated considerable progress, using her powers to incapacitate a group of Fire Nation soldiers with water in its three states. Later, she proved capable of freezing moving axes to stop them and using her waterbending to freeze water in the shape of a ladder to reach Aang. She was also able to form a whip around herself to cut through various types of spears and use her whip to slice a rock in half. Subsequently, she demonstrated the ability to create an ice bridge, which she used to transport herself either to get Aang out of danger or to reach Earth King Kuei's war balloon.

Katara's innate aptitude for waterbending made her a rare case as well; naturally, she gained access to the incredible ability to heal by manipulating the chi pathways in a person's body, including her own. She accidentally discovered this ability after Aang accidentally burned her hands, and she would later use this power again to heal Aang's own burns after his confrontation with Admiral Zhao. Once she arrived at the Northern Water Tribe, she further developed this ability by training with Yugoda.

With the help of a small vial of water from the Spirit Oasis, which possessed special properties, Katara's healing abilities were enhanced. She nearly used the Spirit Water to try and heal Zuko's scar, but Iroh and Aang intervened, leaving Zuko angry at Iroh for allying with the Avatar. Later, however, she used the Spirit Water to revive Aang after he was struck in the back by Azula's lightning. Katara unsuccessfully attempted to heal Jet after he was fatally wounded by Long Feng. During the invasion, Katara's father, Hakoda, was injured while attacking a Fire Nation ballista tower. Her intervention healed him, allowing him to walk again. During the Agni Kai between Azula and Zuko, Azula generated a lightning bolt and aimed it at Katara instead of Zuko. However, Zuko jumped in front of Katara and let the lightning strike him instead, narrowly avoiding death. After Azula was chained to a gate, Katara used her healing to help Zuko. Her healing was successful enough that he was able to stand just moments after the treatment began.

Katara learned new waterbending techniques from Waterbending Master Hama, who used to reside in the Southern Water Tribe, learning to draw water from the moisture in the air and from plants. She also learned bloodbending, the dark and sinister ability to manipulate the water within the bodies of all living beings, controlling them like puppets. Katara was deeply distressed after being tricked into learning the technique, weeping after using it to save Sokka and Aang from Hama.

Some time later, Katara traveled with Zuko to hunt down the man who had murdered her mother, Yon Rha, the leader of the Southern Raiders. The night she arrived at the Southern Raiders' ship, under the full moon, she single-handedly threw almost the entire crew overboard. When she discovered the captain was there, she let her anger take over and began bloodbending him, which shocked Zuko. When she looked into his eyes and realized he wasn't her mother's killer, she released him, shocked and dismayed that she had just bloodbent on an innocent person. Although this was the last time she used the well-known technique, she came to understand its workings to a great extent.
