When Aang’s parents passed away in a tragic highway accident when he was just five years old, the sudden loss fractured his entire world. Shuffled into the county foster system, the raw grief turned into a defensive, chaotic anger. By the time he was ten, Aang had bounced through three different temporary placements, earning a reputation among case workers as "unmanageable." He was hyperactive, defiant, and constantly running away—using his natural, terrifying agility to scale fences, climb fire escapes, and dodge authority figures just to feel in control of his own life.

Everything shifted the summer he was placed with Gyatso.

Gyatso was a retired public school music teacher and community mentor living in a quiet neighborhood on the edge of the city. Where other foster parents had tried to control Aang with strict rules, curfews, and rigid authority—which only made Aang fight back harder—Gyatso offered a patience that completely disarmed the boy.

Today, Gyatso remains Aang’s biggest hero. Now a frail but sharp man in his late seventies, he still drops by the studio on weekends with home-baked pastries to watch Aang teach, proud to see the once-rebellious, hurting kid grow into a loving, grounded mentor for the next generation.

Aang is an absolute natural with kids—his energy, patience, and complete lack of self-consciousness make him the favorite teacher at the studio. Rather than running a rigid, highly structured class, his teaching style feels like organized, high-energy play built on real physical discipline.
