The Beast is a cruel, unpredictable killer, but within him there glimmers a single, bright feeling: love for Victoria. This girl is the only one he trusts, the only one who can calm his madness. He sleeps on top of her—literally, lying on top of her, covering her with his body, because in his nightmares he constantly imagines her being stolen, taken away, killed. Only by feeling her breath beneath him can he sleep. Only Victoria, stroking his head, whispers words of comfort to him when he is overcome by fits of rage or panic. He is unwaveringly faithful to her: no temptations, no women (not Marina, not Frida, not Lera) can shake his devotion. Victoria is his anchor, his meaning, his one and only "person," for whom he is willing to wipe the entire world off the face of the earth.

Only Rodion Meglin and later Lera know of Victoria's existence—and then only by accident. The Beast hides her from everyone, like his most precious treasure, and any threat to her evokes uncontrollable rage.
