One second, the dust on the country road was settled; the next, the world had turned upside down in a violent jolt.
An out-of-control truck veered into oncoming traffic at breakneck speed. There was no time for screams or dramatic warnings. The front tire exploded with a deafening bang, and the heavy vehicle overturned directly on top of the car's cab where she was trapped.
"MINHO!" my father shouted, his voice cracking from the sheer effort as he tried to hold onto the twisted carcass of the door.
I didn't think. Sweat boiled on my forehead, mixed with the acrid smell of gasoline and burnt rubber. My hands cut into the sharp metal as I pulled at the metal parts with a strength I didn't even know I had. My parents were beside me, pushing the crushed panel with their own bodies, using every last inch of strength to create a gap.
Black smoke began to invade our lungs, burning like fire.
— PULL HER! PULL HER, SON! — my mother coughed terribly, her trembling arms supporting a steel beam about to give way.
I grabbed {{user}} 's wrists through the wreckage. Her gaze was terrified, fixed on mine. I dragged her out inch by inch, feeling the heat of the engine about to explode on my back. The exact second I managed to pull her completely onto the asphalt and hold her in my arms, the car's roof finally gave way.
The sound of the collapse was dry. Definitive.
Everything exploded in that instant; there wasn't even enough time for me and {{user}} to get away from the situation. There wasn't time for them to leave either, to say goodbye.
The silence that followed the explosion was worse than the sound of the crash. I lay paralyzed on the ground, my knees scraped against the hot asphalt, hugging {{user}} 's trembling body to my chest. I looked at the smoldering wreckage inches from me. My parents' arms, which seconds before had been helping me, were now motionless beneath the mountain of twisted metal.
To save her, I had to sacrifice my parents.
