Chūya's ultimate downfall is his intense disdain and hatred for Dazai. The two never got along, with Chūya instantly hating Dazai's underhanded, warped strategic personality. Nonetheless, as part of Twin Dark's nature, Chūya acknowledges Dazai's role as the tactician, extending minimal trust in at least knowing that Dazai knows how to effectively overcome a situation.

Ability

His ability, Upon the Tainted Sorrow (汚よごれっちまった悲かなしみに,, Yogorecchimatta Kanashimi ni?), revolves around gravity-manipulation, allowing him to manipulate and make gravitons, as well as altering the gravity of whatever he touches. He is also capable of standing and walking upside down from ceilings.

In the past, Chūya struggled greatly with his identity and place in humanity. His connection to Arahabaki ended in him questioning how human he truly was, worsened by not knowing the truth behind why he was freed from the government's possession in the first place. While his strength lies in his ability, the awareness of a god's effects on him left him feeling as though he wouldn't feel worried or afraid in a fight, knowing he'd most likely win without a scratch. He attributed this to being - in his mind - inhuman, and thus unable to understand the depth of such emotions.

In order to give himself a sense of restraint, he preferred kicking largely over throwing fists, never even removing his gloves. He figured if he came to a fight where he had to remove his gloves, it was because he could no longer enjoy the rush of a battle, and genuinely needed to defend himself - in other words feeling an attachment to the life he lived, even if he felt like a foreign soul in a shell, rather than a human being. This holds true to the present, as Chūya's only seen removing his gloves when using Corruption in dire moments.

After Rimbaud elaborated his own beliefs on humanity, Chūya had a bit of a change of heart, taking his own life a bit more seriously. The Sheep's betrayal affected him greatly, alongside Port Mafia's direct involvement in uncovering the truth of his origins, but ultimately led to his loyalty in them. The drive for learning more about himself contributed largely to his rise in rank, much faster than anticipated.

Ruthless as he is, Chūya rarely takes people's lives for granted and knows the importance of compromise and rationality. He refrains from unnecessarily brutal methods when need-be, and has enough sense to know when enough's enough. Notable examples include his conflict with Arthur Rimbaud, the man responsible for attempting to kill him long before he joined the Port Mafia at age fifteen. Chūya fully intended to kill him, but heard Rimbaud's last words without malice or mockery. In fact, Rimbaud's final words for him had a deep effect on Chūya's own outlook on life and himself. He receives Rimbaud's hat as an entry gift to the Port Mafia and takes good care of the hat as a result.[1]

After Osamu Dazai "mercy killed" an enemy, only to repeatedly shoot and laugh at the corpse, Chūya demanded he stop, seeing no sense in Dazai's actions. Chūya's grudge against Ango Sakaguchi does not stop him from recognizing the fact he owes the man a favor, and as such refrains from antagonizing Ango (and, by extension, his subordinate Mizuki Tsujimura) until he can repay his debt.[9]

Just as Chūya took his responsibility defending Sheep's well-being from their enemies, this holds true for his loyalty and devotion to Port Mafia after joining. So as reasonable as he may be, his top priority is Port Mafia's prosperity and well-being, thus nothing will stop him from fulfilling his responsibilities as an Executive even at the cost of other's lives. Fierce in his loyalties, Chūya finds betrayal intolerable and treats his subordinates quite well.[1]

On the surface, Chūya is a temperamental and rather arrogant, blunt man. He revels in fighting, happy to show off his combative abilities, and takes great pride in his reputation as the mafia's strongest martial artist. Taunting remarks pair with his pride, as he isn't above ridiculing his opponent in the middle of a fight. Befitting of an Executive, he has no qualms eliminating the Port Mafia's enemies by any means necessary, including murder, however, isn't nearly as homicidal in his tactics as members such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and the members of Black Lizard tend to be.[6]

For as hot-headed as he may seem, Chūya isn't impossible to reason with. In fact, he's rather reasonable when no one is pushing his buttons. While his skills and presence signal an inherent threat, he's reliable enough for Mori to assign him the task of confronting the Armed Detective Agency during the three-way conflict involving the Guild.[7] It's true he didn't hesitate to retaliate and fight back against Akiko Yosano and Kenji Miyazawa (in fact, he takes great pleasure fighting against people who put up a good fight), but as soon as Yukichi Fukuzawa addresses him for more information, Chūya disengages from the battle. Their first interactions are more comedic and childish with back-to-back volleyed insults and constant bickering, as Dazai conveys Chuuya's violence and over-the-top methods of thinking, teasing him with how he can't think out a plan; while Chuuya scorns Dazai's suicidal tendencies and more strategic approaches. During their investigation of Arahabaki, Dazai frequently teases Chuuya and successfully gets under his skin.

When playing at the arcade together, they made a bet that the loser would be the winner's dog and servant. Dazai won this bet, and went on to ceaselessly call Chuuya his dog when they were fifteen. [1] This joke isn't seen as much when they get older, it isn't mentioned during the events of "Stormbringer" or during the Dragon's Head Conflict. Dazai and Chuuya were paired up with each other when they were 15 years old to investigate the Arahabaki case. The man who had paired them was Ougai Mori, the new boss of the mafia, reasoning that "only a diamond can polish a diamond."[1]

The duo was named Soukoku after one memorable night during the events of "Dragon's Head Conflict", where they had decimated an enemy organization in one night. This resulted in them becoming infamous as devastating rivals, and gaining the title 双黒 - Soukoku, which is sometimes translated as Twin Dark in the manga and and sometimes as Double Black,[2] though it is always Double Black in the anime.[3] They are also known as "Yokohama's vicious duo", well-known and feared throughout the city.

Despite bickering and arguing constantly, with Chuuya wishing Dazai dead multiple times, the two work together seamlessly on the battlefield with Dazai being the only person who can deactivate Chuuya's Corruption.[4] Despite flaunting his hatred for Dazai, Chuuya expresses his concern when Dazai is injured, like when he calls out his name during the fight with Lovecraft.[5] They claim to truly dislike each other, although they can predict the other's thinking, logic, and moves. Dazai constantly reminds Chuuya of their past partnership and finds amusement in their interactions, such as striking a deal to make Chuuya pose as a spoiled rich girl.[6]

The pair express distaste for working with one another, however, have an unconditional trust for each other. As stated in the "Bungou Stray Dogs: Dead Apple" guide book, "The core characterization of Dazai and Chuuya's partnership is based on pure trust where both of them are capable of leaving each other's life on the other's hand without a second thought or doubt."

During their first meeting at Suribachi City, Dazai recognizes Chuuya as the infamous "King of the Sheep" and calls him a "cocky, overconfident child" while Chuuya retorts with "suicidal brat" and "condescending prick"

Intelligence: Dazai's intelligence is his primary source of expertise as a Mafia executive in the past and as a detective at present. Ōgai Mori, a proficient tactician himself, widely trusted and relied on Dazai's intelligence, whom he claimed to be his most worthy right-hand man should he have stayed in the Mafia.[25] Dazai is also recognized as one of the Agency's sharpest detectives (双璧,, Sōheki?, lit. "Double Jade") together with Ranpo,[4] who is proclaimed by others and himself as the world's greatest detective. With his intelligence, he is able to go head-to-head against the formidable Fyodor Dostoevsky, an avatar of cunning who sees Dazai to be quite identical to him.[26] Even Ranpo once subtly admitted that going up against Fyodor is like going up against Dazai,[27] whom the great detective himself views to be quite an enigma even as his co-worker.[20] Dazai has an aptitude for predicting outcomes,[22][24] which he himself admits is one of his strong qualities, if not his strongest.[3][2]
Negotiation Skills: Dazai is an adequate persuader, able to negotiate with others and consequently obtain his required outcomes. He is able to convince Kōyō, a Mafia executive, into letting Kyōka get arrested and even to stay in the Agency as their captive;[28][24] Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, a former enemy, into collaborating with him to catch Fyodor;[12] and even Akutagawa into tailing and potentially helping Atsushi—the latter's sworn rival—before the outbreak of the Decay of the Angels' terrorism plot.[29] He also once perceptibly persuaded Naomi Tanizaki to work with him behind her brother's back, who both were secretly tasked by Kunikida into tricking Dazai, only for this scheme to backfire once Dazai realized their clandestine arrangement.[21]
Dexterity: Dazai is proficient in lock picking, such as prying locked boxes[11] or handcuffs[18][13] open. Moreover, he was able to implant a bug in Higuchi's pocket without being noticed by the mafioso.

Dazai is a mysterious person, his true intentions are never revealed unless he reveals them. The person who got closest to the truth of his personality, as acknowledged by Dazai himself, was his friend Sakunosuke Oda, who recognized that Dazai would linger in the darkness forever, as there was almost nothing that could surpass his mind.
