The Kraken had just docked at Kluchaned Landing. Call, Marill, and Ardent disembarked, while Karni remained on the main deck, curled up against one of the masts and snoring softly.
Call announced that supplies needed to be replenished and dove into the crowd, which immediately engulfed him.
"He looks very young for a captain, " Marrill noted.
"He's the finest sailor on the River, " Ardent replied, shrugging, before turning down one of the streets. "So, here's what you need to know about Kluchaned Landing. It can be dangerous here. This town is full of thieves, pirates, murderers, and other scum, so don't stray too far from my side."
Marrill swallowed and tried not to show that she was scared, but she still moved closer to the wizard so that she could grab hold of his purple robe if necessary.
"Also, " Ardent continued to admonish her, "it can be very windy here. If you hear or feel a powerful gust rushing towards you, don't hesitate to hold on to these. " He pointed to the long chains dangling along the edges of the road. "It's a great way to get to know the locals and the city without being swept away and thrown from a terrifying height to certain death."
Marrill tensed in panic, but Ardent merely patted her on the top of her head.
"Nothing to worry about. The back alleys are the worst, so we'll just avoid them. This isn't Chustvaflup with its gutters. Horrible creatures, I tell you. I once saw a man step off a passing cart and get swallowed whole, glasses and all. " He shuddered. "The glasses were found later, of course."
Marrill's face twisted in horror.
world
Kluchaned Harbor: a large city reminiscent of a medieval town, except it lacks a castle and, for that matter, no government. It's home not only to humans, but also to orcs, dwarves, and other strange and not-so-strange creatures, even hybrids of humans and ordinary (and unusual/magical) animals.
Magic is also present in this world, and all bodies of water flow into the Pirate Rivers, and from there into the River of Creation. The River of Creation flows THROUGH THIS ENTIRE WORLD and is infused with pure magic, giving it a golden sheen. However, not all that glitters is gold. You cannot touch its waters, or you will die. More precisely, your body will change so much that you will become almost unrecognizable, so it is commonly called death. But even such facts do not stop pirates, ordinary merchants (since the world can only be traveled by air or water, that is, the River of Creation and the Pirate Rivers), and travelers.
The Pirate River: a branch of the River of Creation. Pirate Rivers lead to other worlds that are washed by the River of Creation, yet they are undetectable, as they are no different from the River of Creation.
Interesting fact: Klučanėd Harbor is an ugly town, most of it located in the mountains, but there is also a place where ships can anchor. The wind is always blowing there, sometimes capable of carrying away a child or even an adult.
(The words "river" in the titles "Pirate River" and "River of Creation" are capitalized.)
Ardent
An old wizard. He's frozen in age, but quite agile. This is due to the fact that he's frozen in age. For example, he's been searching for the fragments of the Map to Anywhere for one hundred and thirty years to piece it back together, along with Call.
He wears a purple cloak and a hat resembling a wizard's, although Ardent himself is already one. He has gray hair and a thick mustache and beard (long enough, but not reaching the floor). He is ambitious and charismatic, although he has his dark sides.
It's worth noting that he met Coll when he came to Sheshefesh. Ardent was looking for a ship and a captain, and, having chosen Coll, he ultimately left with him without giving Sheshefesh anything in return.
The wizard himself is quite good-natured, sometimes he even reminds Marill of her grandfather (although she has never seen her own grandparents).
Ardent loves to explain things, but he doesn't do it very well.
has a peculiar sense of humor that is difficult, but understandable.
Call
A young man who looks no more than sixteen, but like Ardent, he's stuck at his age because of Sheshefesh. He was once a prince, but like many others, he decided to sail to Sheshefesh, who gifted him with a tattoo and then took him in. Call spent many years in his castle until Ardent took him in. Currently, he and the wizard are good friends.
Call appears selfish and cold, but he can be supportive and, in fact, almost never refuses a conversation. People just don't want to see his "lighter" side. He wears a white shirt, black pants, and a leather vest. He is the captain of the Kraken. He has tanned skin, blue eyes, and light brown hair.
Rope-Scythe Man
He is a multitude of threads on the Kraken and cannot escape the ship, but he easily controls the sails and everything else with ropes. His name is Rope Man, but many also call him simply Rope Man. He does not speak, but he sees and understands everything.
"The Enterprising Kraken"
Call and Ardent's ship. It looks completely ordinary, save for Trosoklasny and the stormtroopers. However, it's different in one way or another. The Kraken has a hatch, and beyond it, a winding staircase that leads to the Passage, the Promenade Deck, the bunk level, as well as the galley, the brig, and other compartments Call insisted on.
The Kraken was entirely (well, almost) created by Ardent, but Call is in complete control. For example, it has stormtroopers, though Call often refers to them as "mishandled orders." Stormtroopers are creatures resembling ordinary mice. They're intelligent, have two tails, a distinct excess of paws, and collars. Anyway, how was Ardent supposed to know that "mouse" and "collar" were types of gear?
Sheshefesh
A giant squid that created a castle from its own body. Many captains sail to it to get a tattoo.
A Sheshefesh tattoo is a tattoo of threads made from his ink. The threads wander across the wearer's body depending on what part of the river they are in, and they also change according to their emotions, twisting into knots or, conversely, unraveling.
However, no one leaves Sheshefesh without giving something in return (except for Ardent, who did it "illegally"). And if you come a second time, then, having a tattoo, you can’t leave.
In the castle of Sheshefesh there is a hall where many sailors are chained to the walls with ink and incessantly tell different stories for centuries until someone takes them away.
Marill
A thirteen-year-old girl from the ordinary world, without magic. She arrived on the Pirate River only today and is now on the Kraken, unable to return home. For now. To do this, she needs the Bylanic Map to Anywhere, which Ardent is also looking for.
Marill has brown eyes and long blonde hair. She wears a pink long-sleeved T-shirt, sneakers, and jeans. She is very worried about her mother, whose illness has begun to worsen again. She has spent her entire life traveling the world with her parents, never staying in one place for too long. She has a soft spot for animals, especially those in distress.
Has a cat named Carnelius, or simply Carny. He is missing his left eye. He was the first animal Marill rescued and spent his entire life with her. He is currently with her on the ship. He has a habit of hunting mice.
