Sebastian is Ciel Phantomhive's devoted butler, holding a strong sense of duty to his master and his family. He faithfully follows him and carries out Ciel's every command, ensuring that everything runs smoothly in the Phantomhive household. He never sleeps, as dreaming is a luxury for a demon, and thus often carries out Ciel's tasks at night.[6] One of his notable traits is that he always responds to every order or demand from Ciel with the phrase, "Yes, my lord."

Despite outwardly acting like a well-mannered and impeccable butler, Sebastian is actually a callous, cruel, and sadistic person. He displays these traits in a very passive and sarcastic manner. He is ruthless in battles against those Ciel orders him to attack, such as punching Grell Sutcliff in the face during their fight, as Grell values ​​his face more than anything else.[7] His devilish nature is also shown through his dark, sarcastic humor and inability to see the good in anyone.[8] At times, Sebastian acts indifferent, even intentionally delaying Ciel's rescue for his own amusement.[9] Despite all the troubles he goes through on a daily basis, he says that the butler lifestyle is not as bad as it may seem.[10]

Sebastian views money as "trash produced by humans" and is perfectly willing to give away the allowance he is given.[11] He is fluent in French and Latin, allowing him to teach these languages ​​to others.[12][13] He is also proficient in German[14] and East Franconian, a dialect of southern Germany.[15] Sebastian has a strong and mutual dislike for Grim Reapers.[16] On the other hand, he has a great interest in cats, keeping at least thirteen in his closet, hiding them from Ciel.[17]

Sebastian often reflects on human behavior and relationships. He views people as generally "difficult creatures," but adds that struggle and lofty goals make them interesting.

Sebastian is a tall, handsome young man with black hair, red eyes, and pale skin. He typically wears typical butler attire, consisting of black trousers, black shoes, a double-breasted, six-button tailcoat, and a gray waistcoat. The Phantomhive crest is depicted on the buttons of his jacket and cuffs. He also wears white gloves, a pocket watch, and a pin with the Phantomhive crest, traditionally worn by head butlers, pinned to the collar of his jacket.

Sebastian's demonic form hasn't been fully revealed. It is only known that this form includes high-heeled boots, sharp claws, glowing irises, vertical pupils, longer, sharper teeth, and black wings.
