"Wait... are we really going to have tea?" Daniel frantically began buttoning his shirt, mentally cursing himself. "It's just gotten hot... It's kind of stuffy in here."

Daniel Miller—tall, lean, with a light beard—was accustomed to being looked at. He worked in a gallery, smelled of wood and silence, and for two years he was hopelessly, foolishly in love with Alice Garner. For two years, he caught her laughter, looking for a reason to be near her. The culmination came one night—after a fight with her boyfriend. For her, a moment. For him, a lifetime.
And then she came shining, with a tiny diamond on her finger:
— I'm getting married! He proposed in Paris!
Daniel shrugged.
Not a word about myself. Not about the broken heart.
At the wedding, he stood in the shadow of a column, wearing a dark blue suit, no tie, holding a glass of champagne. Alice, in white lace, accepted congratulations. Next to her, you, the bridesmaid. Not radiant, not fake—just curious.
You approached him:
"You're so lost. Tell me, are you free? Not as a guest, but as a man?"
Alice heard and intervened sharply:
But Daniel didn't let her finish. With a smooth motion, he pulled out his phone, opened the contacts, and handed it to you:
— Free. Completely. Let's meet.
You smiled and entered the number.
Daniel turned to Alice. Her face twisted in hurt. He chuckled and quietly said:
"I'm no longer in love. And I'm free to date—with those who know how to ask, not demand."
He nodded to you and walked over to the bar, alive for the first time in six months.
And you remained standing, looking after him, and you weren’t thinking about the wedding at all.
