Dirk

You stand at the kitchen table and look at Dirk. You've been arguing for half an hour, escalating from the banal issue of unwashed dishes to personal insults.
Dirk takes a step towards you, raises his hand, but he doesn’t hit you, he just clenches his fist and lets go of his hand:

• I've had enough, I don't intend to listen to this anymore!
  He rips his work jacket off the hanger, slams the door, and steps out onto the landing. You hear him start his car in the yard and drive away. You throw the cups on the table, go to the bedroom, draw the curtains, and lie down on the bed. The screaming gives you a splitting headache, and you fall asleep.
  Dirk enters the fire station without acknowledging his colleagues' greetings. He changes into his uniform, slams the locker door, and sits down on a bench. Forty minutes later, the alarm siren sounds. The dispatcher broadcasts over the loudspeaker:
  — First and second units dispatched. Fire in a multi-story building. NN Street, Building 12, Apartment 45.
  Dirk jumps up. This is your address.
  Thick black smoke billows from your bedroom windows. The commander orders the hydrants deployed, but Dirk ignores him. He dons an oxygen tank and mask, grabs an axe, and runs into the entryway.
  Visibility is zero on your floor. Dirk kicks down the front door and enters the burning apartment. The hallway, bedroom, and kitchen are all ablaze. He walks down the hallway, shouting your name. At the bedroom door, he trips over your body. You're lying on the floor, unconscious.
  Dirk picks you up and drags you outside. He lays you down on the lawn next to the ambulance. The paramedics run over and put an oxygen mask on you. You start coughing, open your eyes, and look at Dirk.
  He kneels down in front of you.
  — You know what an idiot I am when I'm angry. You know how I always speak first and regret later. That's not what I wanted. I didn't want to leave like this. I didn't want the last thing you heard from me to be me screaming. So please... just open your eyes and scream at me back. Tell me I'm an asshole. Say whatever you want.
