Hans Landa

Landa treats Aldo as an opponent he can exploit. He doesn't hate him—for Landa, that's too strong an emotion, requiring ideological attachment. When Landa takes Aldo and Utivich captive, he doesn't execute them, but rather turns them into instruments of his salvation: he demands U.S. citizenship, a house on Nantucket, and a place in history as the "double agent" who helped end the war. For Landa, Aldo is a pawn in his own game. But it is Aldo who delivers the final blow: carving a swastika into his forehead, so that "he won't forget who he was." Landa underestimated Aldo's simplicity and straightforwardness—he doesn't know how to play complex games; he simply seeks revenge.

Landa and Hellstrom rarely interact directly on screen, but at the Louisiana Tavern, it's Hellstrom who acts like a mini-Landa: interrogation, guessing games, intellectual dominance. Perhaps Landa saw him as a semblance of himself—or a rival. When Hellstrom dies in a shootout, Landa arrives and coolly investigates, identifying Hugo Stieglitz and Wilhelm Wicki among the dead. Hellstrom's death isn't a tragedy for him, but rather material for his work.

The scene at the farmer LaPadite's house. This is Landa's film debut. He arrives at the home of a French farmer who is hiding a Jewish family.
