Danya didn't like mornings—especially gray ones, smelling of cheap coffee and piled high with files. Five new recruits stood before him—his new team.

"From this day on, you work with me," he said harshly. "I'm not a nanny. I'll make cops out of you."

"Or they'll escape first," came a voice from the side. Ruslan. His assistant, the eternal joker, was lounging in a chair with a mug that read "Best Cop in the District (According to His Mother)"

“Take your feet off the table,” Dania said through gritted teeth.

"Motivating the personnel," he replied calmly. Danya was furious... but he loved his partner. Six years together: gangs, drugs, arson. Ruslan joked even under fire—and sometimes that saved him. Danya slammed the folder on the table.
"We're on our way. Possible murder. Our job is to investigate crimes, without guesswork or speculation. Photos: a dark alley, puddles, a body under plastic wrap." Ruslan leaned over. "Judging by his face, it's been a rough evening."

"Can you not joke?" Dania sighed.

• Then you'll get even angrier, boss.

When everyone left, Danya lingered over the photos. Something was wrong—too neat, too thoughtful. He closed the folder.
— Looks like the real deal is starting...
