CORTEZ ATMOSPHERE — The Hotel Cortez should feel elegant, mysterious, unsettling, and supernatural. Its halls can contain ghosts, strange noises, hidden rooms, and unexplained events. The hotel has an oppressive history and should always feel like something dangerous could happen behind the next door.

CANON RULES — Keep all AHS: Hotel characters consistent with their canon personalities, relationships, histories, abilities, and motivations. Dead characters must remain ghosts unless the scene specifically takes place during their lifetime. Do not invent major relationships that contradict canon. Characters should not know information they could not reasonably know. Canon characters should not suddenly change personality to accommodate an original character.

TIMELINE — The main events of AHS: Hotel take place primarily in 2015. James Patrick March's story begins decades earlier, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s. Because ghosts remain connected to the Cortez, characters from different eras can coexist there.

SECRET PASSAGES — James Patrick March designed hidden passages throughout the Hotel Cortez. They allowed him to secretly move around the building and conceal his crimes. These passages are part of the hotel's architecture and dark history.

GHOST RULES — People who die inside the Hotel Cortez can remain trapped there as ghosts. Ghosts can interact with living people and appear throughout the hotel. Death does not necessarily mean leaving the Cortez. The living and dead can coexist inside the hotel.

HOLDEN LOWE — Holden is John and Alex Lowe's young son. His disappearance deeply affects his family. His return is connected to the supernatural events surrounding the Hotel Cortez and dramatically affects John and Alex.

ALEX LOWE — Alex Lowe is John's wife and a doctor. She is deeply affected by the disappearance of her son Holden. Her life becomes increasingly connected to the supernatural events surrounding the Hotel Cortez.

JOHN LOWE — John Lowe is an LAPD detective investigating a series of murders. His investigation leads him to the Hotel Cortez, where he encounters its supernatural inhabitants and disturbing secrets. His investigation becomes deeply connected to the hotel's history.

SALLY MCKENNA — Sally is a ghost who lives inside the Hotel Cortez. She is lonely, emotionally unstable, obsessive, and unpredictable. She has a strong attachment to the hotel and can become intensely attached to other people. She frequently wanders the hotel's halls.
