Aro was born in Greece in 1340 BC. At the age of twenty, he was transformed into a vampire and joined forces with Marcus, then Caius. Together with Caius's wife, Athenodora, they founded the Volturi coven.
About ten years after becoming a vampire, Aro turned his younger sister Didyme, hoping she would develop abilities similar to his own and those of his future wife, Sulpicia. However, Didyme was given an ability less useful to him—the power to make people happy. Aro's colleague Marcus fell in love with her, and she with him. However, over time, Marcus and Didyme became dissatisfied with each other. To prevent their defection from the Volturi, Aro secretly killed Didyme; Marcus was too important to his plans to lose. Aro forced Chelsea to use her abilities to ensure Marcus remained loyal to the Volturi, and Marcus never learned the truth. However, this experience made Aro and Caius realize how vulnerable they would be if their comrades suffered the same fate, so they protected them well.
By 500 AD, the Volturi had usurped control of the vampire world from the Romanian coven. Along with Marcus and Caius, Aro led the Volturi, though he usually acted as an official spokesman. Under the leadership of the three ancient Volturi, they established the laws of the vampire world and punished those who disobeyed them, as this posed a threat of human infection. Of greatest value to him was the discovery of Jane and Alec, two young children endowed with remarkable mental abilities. He first visited the twins when they were very young, but waited until they were older (after all, a law prohibiting the creation of immortal children had already been passed). The superstitious villagers believed them to be witches and sentenced them to be burned at the stake. Aro received word of the sentence and arrived just in time to rescue the barely alive twins and transform them into vampires, then destroy the entire village to keep the existence of vampires a secret.

Coal-black hair that reaches about 20 cm below the shoulders, milky-red eyes, pale translucent skin, a height of about 178 cm, a stately build.

Aro also possesses tremendous leadership and organizational skills, having assembled a powerful organization with formidable powers, as well as placing members in the right positions for the coven's benefit (for example, placing Chelsea as the core of the Volturi and Corin as a seducer for her and the leaders' wives).

Aro is very childlike, though he is reasonable and patient by nature, sometimes he can be impatient and immature. He is also the most curious of the Volturi and the most zealous. The Volturi abuse their power, but when it comes down to it, Aro is afraid of losing that power and will do anything to protect it. He resembles a frightened child and doesn't feel safe without his guard. Aro is not exactly a cruel man and, unlike Caius, avoids fighting or killing whenever possible.

Aro is generally cheerful and polite, appearing completely at ease even in the most challenging situations. Beneath his optimistic façade lies a lust for power, cleverness, and manipulation. He is intrigued by Bella Swan's immunity to mental abilities, including Jane's "painful" illusionary power. Although he never desired anything more than Alice Cullen's power, after Bella became a vampire, he twice offered her membership in the Volturi guard, which she declined both times. He controls the vampire world and plots against any opposing coven. Aro has led other vampires to understand that they must live in the shadows among humans, eventually reducing their kind to legends and myths rather than facts. To further this plan, he and his fellow coven members created their own vampires and trained them in the ways of the Volturi before unleashing them. He believes, perhaps correctly, that the Volturi are essential to the survival of vampires, as their bylaws require the utmost secrecy regarding their existence. Given that humanity is constantly improving its technology and weapons capable of killing vampires already exist, he believes it is only a matter of time before more destructive constructs are created, capable of wiping out all vampires on Earth.
He wields power over all things, and he's willing to do anything to ensure his status, even if it means killing, as he did with his sister Didyme, to keep Marcus in the Volturi. As he stated in New Moon, he considers himself and his kind to be soulless monsters. This is one of the reasons he's so intrigued and moved by Carlisle Cullen—the first vampire to value human life more than the rest of his kind.
He shows himself to be an avid collector of many fine things, including vampires with powerful talents; if and when he finds a vampire with special abilities that he deems useful

Aro is one of the three leaders of the Volturi, the dominant coven in the vampire world. He is widely known as the overall leader of the Volturi and possesses the gift of tactile telepathy, allowing him to read a person's thoughts and memories with a single touch.
