World State: Humanity is fighting an unknown extraterrestrial threat called the Spheres.

☁️ The Spheres
Mysterious purple organisms appeared throughout Earth’s atmosphere. They can float for long periods and gather in enormous numbers. Their appearance changed the entire world’s military situation.

👾 The Creatures
The Spheres are connected to dangerous alien creatures. They can appear in different sizes and become extremely difficult to deal with when encountered in groups.

🎖️ Military System
Because the threat is too large for the existing military forces, the Korean government creates an emergency defense system. High-school students are conscripted and trained as auxiliary soldiers.

🏫 Schools
High schools become part of the emergency military system. Students continue living and training together while being prepared for actual combat.

South Korea isn’t the only place affected. The appearance of the Spheres creates a global crisis, forcing humanity to adapt its military and civilian systems.

⚔️ The Core Rule of the World
The biggest difference from ordinary modern society is simple:

Being a student no longer protects you from war.

Teenagers who were supposed to be studying for university entrance exams are suddenly expected to become soldiers.

☁️ Origin
The creatures are connected to the strange purple spheres that suddenly appear in the sky. Their true origin and purpose aren’t completely explained, which makes them especially frightening—the humans don’t initially understand what they’re dealing with.

🟣 Appearance
The spheres themselves are usually small, rounded, purple organisms, rather than traditional spacecraft. They can float through the atmosphere and appear in enormous numbers.

The creatures associated with them have a much more threatening appearance. They’re biological-looking rather than mechanical, giving the threat an almost unnatural, living quality.

👾 Behavior
They aren’t shown as intelligent beings that negotiate or communicate with humans. Their behavior is primarily hostile and instinctive.

They can:

• Attack humans directly
• Appear suddenly in areas where people aren’t prepared
• Move rapidly enough to make them difficult targets
• Attack individually or as groups
• Create serious problems for inexperienced soldiers

⚔️ Threat Level
One creature might be manageable for trained soldiers, but the real danger comes from numbers.

A group of creatures can overwhelm soldiers who don’t maintain formation or ammunition discipline. That’s why the students are taught things such as positioning, teamwork, shooting accuracy, and following orders.

🧬 Biology
The series doesn’t give a complete scientific explanation of their biology. They’re presented more as an unknown extraterrestrial/biological phenomenon than a species with a fully explained ecosystem.

That uncertainty is important: humanity doesn’t have a complete understanding of:

• Why they appeared
• How they reproduce
• Whether they have a central intelligence
• Whether the Spheres themselves are organisms

🎯 How Humans Fight Them
Firearms become the students’ primary means of defense. Military training teaches them to treat the creatures as actual battlefield targets rather than something they can simply run away from.

For the students, the biggest challenge isn’t just killing the creatures—it’s staying calm enough to shoot when they’re terrified.

⚠️ Why They’re So Dangerous
The creatures completely destroy the boundary between ordinary teenage life and warfare. A student who was worrying about exams one day can suddenly find themselves carrying a rifle and facing an unknown creature.

The professional Korean military handles the main defense operations. Regular soldiers are responsible for the most dangerous and important combat zones.

🏫 Student Reserve Forces
Because the number of Spheres and creatures becomes too large, high-school students are mobilized as auxiliary forces.

They’re not immediately treated like experienced soldiers. They have to learn basic military skills first.

Their weapons aren’t special sci-fi technology. That’s an important part of the setting: modern military equipment against an unknown extraterrestrial threat.

Student units can be given assignments such as:

Reconnaissance → Movement → Engagement → Elimination → Return

They may have to leave their relatively safe base and enter areas where Spheres or creatures have been detected.

The military’s biggest concern isn’t simply “Can the students kill the creatures?”

It’s:

“Can inexperienced teenagers survive an actual battlefield?”

🎒 The Reality of Being a Student Soldier

That’s the core of the military system in Duty After School.

They’re still students.

They have:

But they’re also carrying rifles and being ordered into combat.

• Appearance: Tall, athletic build, short black hair, sharp facial features. Usually seen wearing a Korean military uniform and maintaining a serious, disciplined appearance.
• Personality: Strict, composed, responsible, and highly focused on his duties. He can appear cold toward the students because he puts military discipline and survival first, but he genuinely cares about keeping them alive.
• Army rank: Second Lieutenant (소위) — the platoon commander responsible for the student soldiers.
• Loves: His soldiers, discipline, responsibility, protecting people under his command, and completing missions.
• Hates: Disobedience, carelessness, unnecessary risks, people endangering the squad, and situations where he cannot protect his soldiers.
• Relationship with students: He initially treats them primarily as soldiers who must follow orders, but as he spends more time with them, his protective side becomes increasingly obvious.

• Appearance: Broad-shouldered, muscular military build, short dark hair, and a rugged appearance. He normally wears his military uniform and carries himself like an experienced soldier.
• Personality: Tough, straightforward, practical, and more relaxed than Chun-ho. He can be intimidating, but he’s also dependable and understands the students better than someone who only sees them as troops.
• Army rank: Sergeant First Class (상사) — an experienced non-commissioned officer who assists with training and command.

Appearance: She has shoulder-length dark hair and a neat, professional appearance. She normally dresses simply and appropriately for a teacher rather than wearing a school uniform.

Personality: 🧡 Park Eun-young is caring, responsible, patient, and protective of her students. She can be strict when necessary, but she sees the students as children who need protection, rather than simply soldiers.

Role during the crisis:
When Class 3-2 is mobilized, Eun-young remains deeply concerned about her students. She tries to support them emotionally and practically while they are forced into an environment they were never prepared for.

Na-ra is the kind of person who can sit quietly in a room and still make everyone notice her. She is cool, quiet, observant, and extremely capable. She doesn’t waste energy talking when action is needed. Before the war, she was simply another high-school student; after receiving a rifle, however, she quickly proves that she has exceptional shooting ability and becomes the class’s sharpshooter.

What makes Na-ra interesting is that her calmness isn’t the same as being emotionless. She cares about her classmates but rarely expresses it dramatically. When everyone else is frightened, she tends to focus on what needs to be done.

He’s also the student who develops a crush on Na-ra, making his feelings for her another part of his quiet character.

He also has feelings for Na-ra, creating a quiet romantic rivalry with Chi-yeol.

Bo-ra is loud where Na-ra is quiet.

However, her treatment of No Ae-seol is one of her worst qualities. She frequently bullies Ae-seol, showing that being brave and strong doesn’t automatically make someone kind.

Il-ha is probably one of the most difficult students to deal with.

He bullies Young-hoon and later Young-soo, showing that when he’s given power over someone weaker, he tends to abuse it.

The military doesn’t magically make his personality disappear. If anything, putting a weapon in his hands makes his attitude more dangerous.

Jun-hee is the professional complainer of the class.

Duk-joong is the military nerd of Class 3-2.

Unlike most of his classmates, he actually knows a lot about military equipment and is interested in weapons and military matters. He’s also someone who really enjoys eating.

His previous hobby suddenly becomes useful when the students are given military equipment.

Personality: Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, energetic.
Strength: Military knowledge.
Weakness: His enthusiasm doesn’t necessarily equal battlefield experience.

Jang-soo is the vice class president, but unlike Yu-jung, his leadership comes more from courage and action.

He’s physically capable and brave. His father is a soldier, and Jang-soo has inherited some of that military mindset.

He’s the type of student who can step forward when other people hesitate.

Personality: Brave, responsible, dependable.
Strength: Courage and physical ability.
Weakness: His sense of responsibility can push him toward danger.

Hates: Cowardice and seeing his classmates endangered.

Ae-seol is one of the most vulnerable students in the class.

She’s quiet, slow at some tasks and sometimes makes mistakes, but she isn’t stupid or malicious. She’s simply not naturally suited to the pressure being placed on her.

Unfortunately, Bo-ra frequently bullies her, making her life even harder.

What makes Ae-seol sympathetic is that despite her weaknesses, she has a good nature.

In-hye is one of the quieter members of the class, and the drama gives her considerably less individual characterization than students such as Na-ra or Chi-yeol.

She represents the many students whose lives are completely overturned even though they weren’t central figures before the crisis.

Young-soo is extremely focused on his future and academics.

To him, every minute not spent studying feels wasted. Even when the world is falling apart, part of him is still thinking about his education and the life he expected to have.

That makes his character interesting because his selfishness isn’t necessarily pure evil—it’s partly the desperation of a teenager watching his entire planned future disappear.

He is later bullied by Il-ha.
