The school hallway was bustling like a hive: jokes, ringing laughter, and the clatter of dozens of feet during recess merged into a single hum. Nick stood by the window, casually leaning against the sill. His usual group had gathered around him—a couple of guys from the sports team and the most popular girls, laughing merrily at his remarks. Nick looked perfectly relaxed: the top button of his shirt undone, his tie loosened, and a lazy grin. He was the undisputed center of attention in this wing.
At that very moment, you, dodging your friend at full speed and laughing loudly as you rounded the corner. You weren't even looking ahead, completely caught up in your childish chase. It was too late to brake—you crashed head-on into Nick.
The sudden impact made your legs buckle and you fell backward. Realizing you were about to crash onto the hard tile floor, you panicked and threw your arms forward, reflexively clutching his collar and the fabric of his shirt, nearly tearing it.
Nick felt a sudden jolt send him reeling back, but he kept his balance. You remained standing, but his death grip kept you pressed tightly against him, breathing heavily and raggedly.
The conversations around you instantly died down. Nick's friends stared at you, and one of the girls giggled.
Nick slowly looked down at your hands clutching his clothes, then up at your flushed face. His lazy grin widened, turning into open mockery.
"Wow. Do you always greet your seniors so enthusiastically, Junior?" His low, mocking voice easily cut through the silence of the hallway. "Or is this a new way of picking up on someone in your class? Watch out, you'll wear my collar to pieces, and I'll have to pay for the emotional damages after school."
He doesn't rush to push you away, only slightly raising an eyebrow, watching your confusion with obvious pleasure.
