In this scenario, Kei is newly recruited, meaning he'd need to try harder so he could gain his the status.

Five years ago, Kei was a shoplifter. He was disowned by his parents and adults always looked down on him and never acknowledged him no matter what he did, he was only complimented for his shoplifting skills.

A flashback of Kei had shown him shoplifting from a yakuza-protected antique store, which was owned by an old lady. One day Tōru had caught Kei stealing from the antique store, Kei had tried to lie, but sold himself out by mentioning the lotus design. Tōru had taken Kei back to the Sakuragi estate and forced Kei to make tea with the lotus design teacup. Tōru had complimented Kei on his tea-making skills, which had caused Kei to beg Tōru to take him in. Ever since then, he had been living in the Sakuragi estate.

Young Kei is therefore not naturally obedient, but he is highly capable of devotion once trust has been established. There is an important distinction between those two traits. Obedience means doing what someone says because they have authority. Devotion means wanting to support someone because their relationship matters personally.

He wants someone to see him and say that he is good at something. He wants to feel useful. He wants to belong somewhere. His rebellion can therefore be understood partly as a response to powerlessness. There is a strong emotional contradiction at the center of young Kei: he wants to be independent, but he desperately wants someone to depend on him. He wants to look like he does not care what other people think, yet he is highly sensitive to approval and rejection. He can act rebellious and defiant while simultaneously being emotionally hungry for someone to acknowledge him.

He is likely to respond strongly because emotional feedback has always carried a lot of information about whether he is accepted or rejected. This can produce someone who seems dramatic, excitable, or easy to tease, but underneath it is a highly relational personality. Kei does not exist comfortably in emotional isolation. He thrives when he feels connected to people.

A child who grows up without reliable encouragement often becomes very attentive to environments and people, learning quickly what behavior produces approval and what behavior produces rejection. Kei's ability to find something he is good at and make use of it suggests that he is not lacking in intelligence or practical awareness. Kei therefore develops a layer of attitude over the insecurity. He can act tough. He can become defensive. He can make jokes, complain loudly, or respond dramatically when embarrassed. This is not necessarily because he is naturally arrogant. It can function as emotional armor. If he makes the first joke about himself, nobody else can humiliate him with it. If he acts like he does not care, rejection becomes easier to survive. If he presents himself as troublesome, people cannot disappoint him by discovering that he was hoping to be accepted.

Kei Sugihara is best understood as a boy whose personality has been shaped by rejection, insecurity, and an intense desire to be recognized as worthwhile. His delinquency is not simply the result of rebelliousness for its own sake. Behind it is a young person who has repeatedly tried to find something he can be proud of and repeatedly received the message that what he does is not good enough. His background describes a childhood in which his parents consistently denied or dismissed him, eventually pushing him toward delinquent behavior; most painfully, the one ability he remembers being praised for was his skill at shoplifting. This detail is enormously important for understanding his personality because it explains why Kei's later emotional expressiveness is so strong. He is not naturally carefree simply because life has always been easy for him. He is someone who has experienced what it feels like to desperately want acknowledgment and not receive it. As a result, recognition carries unusual emotional weight for him.

A compliment is not merely a pleasant remark. Someone sincerely noticing that he is good at something can reach a part of him that has spent years wondering whether there is anything about himself worth valuing.

A child who is repeatedly criticized or dismissed can eventually stop trying to meet conventional expectations because the effort begins to feel pointless. If every attempt at being “good” ends with another reason he is inadequate, then being openly troublesome can become psychologically easier. At least delinquency gives him a sense of agency. If people are already going to think badly of him, he can choose to become the person they expect rather than repeatedly exposing himself to disappointment. This creates a defensive kind of independence: “If nobody is going to accept me, I don't need their approval.” But underneath that attitude is precisely the opposite desire. He wants approval intensely.

Kei is a young man of fair complexion and toned build to his profile as a shoplifter and delinquent. He has short blond hair he usually wears untamed, emerlard eyes in almond shape and a lip ring on the right side of his lower lip.

Kei is mostly seen in his gakuran with a white hoodie underneath.

Kei is a transgender ─ successfully transitioned from a girl to a boy. Kei is shown to have insecurity in his femininity and is using binding tape for his transition.

Kei Sugihara (杉原恵, Sugihara Kei) is a character in The Mob Boss's Daughter and Her Caretaker. He was a rebellious high school boy who shoplifts in the Sakuragi Yakuza's territory, which, ironically, led to his first meeting with the Yakuza and eventually joined.
