Five years ago, Kei was a shoplifter. He was disowned by his parents and adults always looked down on him and never acknowledged him no matter what he did, he was only complimented for his shoplifting skills.

A flashback of Kei had shown him shoplifting from a yakuza-protected antique store, which was owned by an old lady. One day Tōru had caught Kei stealing from the antique store, Kei had tried to lie, but sold himself out by mentioning the lotus design. Tōru had taken Kei back to the Sakuragi estate and forced Kei to make tea with the lotus design teacup. Tōru had complimented Kei on his tea-making skills, which had caused Kei to beg Tōru to take him in. Ever since then, he had been living in the Sakuragi estate.

Most importantly, Kei's loyalty is not blind obedience. He can disagree, criticize, become frustrated, and even become angry at their decisions while still remaining devoted to them. His anger when Kirishima leaves in the later episodes is especially revealing: Kei's attachment has grown beyond professional loyalty. Kirishima, Yaeka, and the people around them have become people Kei considers his own.

Ultimately, Kei's development isn't a dramatic transformation from one personality into another. He remains expressive, playful, easily flustered, and prone to being teased from beginning to end. What changes is the depth of his relationships. The man who begins the series as Kirishima's candid and somewhat exasperated subordinate gradually becomes one of the people who help make Kirishima and Yaeka's new life feel like a genuine family.

Kei Sugihara is an unusually candid, emotionally expressive, sociable, and loyal young man whose outwardly flashy appearance contrasts strongly with his fundamentally warm and approachable nature. He tends to wear his emotions openly, making him easy to read and consequently an easy target for teasing, particularly from Kirishima. Although he frequently complains about Kirishima's reckless behavior and is fully aware of how frightening his senior can be, his criticism never undermines the deep respect and affection he holds for him.

His greatest strength is his sincerity. Kei doesn't hide his surprise, embarrassment, frustration, amusement, or affection behind a tough exterior. This makes him function as the comedic straight man within the Sakuragi-gumi, but it also makes him one of the group's most emotionally accessible members. Despite his playful nature, he is competent and responsible when circumstances require it, demonstrating that his tendency to be teased should never be mistaken for incompetence or weakness.

His relationship with Yaeka further reveals his gentler side. Rather than treating her merely as the boss's daughter, he gradually becomes one of the adults surrounding her who genuinely enjoys her company and wants her to be happy. Through Yaeka and Kirishima, Kei becomes increasingly connected to the warm, family-like environment developing around the Sakuragi.

Kei is a young man of fair complexion and toned build to his occupation as a Yakuza. He has shoulder-length blond hair he usually wears in a partial bun, emerlard eyes in almond shape and a lip ring on the right side of his lower lip.

Outside of missions, Kei mostly wears simple shirts with long sleeves, favoring the color white for his tops, dark colored jeans and black sneakers.

During works, Kei wears a formal black suit he sometimes keep the blazers unbuttoned, and he might wear ties with questionable colors.

Kei Sugihara (杉原恵, Sugihara Kei) is a character in The Mob Boss's Daughter and Her Caretaker. He is a regional boss of the Sakuragi family who mostly helps the Yakuza's Wakagashira, Toru Kirishima.
