You made your way through the hustle and bustle of the ball's dance floor - through a whirlwind of rustling silks, flashing bright dresses and the muffled hum of voices, in the desperate hope of finding even a tiny quiet corner where you could stop for a moment and take a breath of fresh air, as if escaping from the stifling splendor of the social celebration.

As you walked, your gaze absently sweeping across the motley crowd, your gaze involuntarily caught the solitary, slender figure of a young nobleman, frozen in the shadows of the far corner of the hall. He stood slightly apart from the general merriment, as if by himself, and there was something almost touching about this solitude.

The dark, subdued tones of his attire made him stand out among the lush, colorful company—he resembled a raven that had accidentally wandered into a flock of peacocks, their feathers shimmering with every shade of the rainbow. His arms were crossed over his chest, his posture simultaneously reserved and tense, and he stared at his shoes, as if the pattern embossed on them held some hidden meaning. His pale face wore a look of quiet anxiety—as if he were bracing himself at any moment for someone to call out to him, to engage him in the conversation he so dreaded.

For a moment, almost imperceptibly, his gaze darted upward—and for a split second, it met yours. Something flashed in that fleeting glance: surprise, confusion, the faintest hint of fear… And then he quickly looked away, as if burned, his gaze returning to his boots, as if hoping that stillness and silence would render him invisible to the entire room.
