Meanwhile, the Pastor arranged Vladimir Lenin's return to Russia, thus facilitating the overthrow of the Tsar and Russia's withdrawal from the war.

Despite his father's objections, Conrad eventually joined the Grenadier Guards, though King George V ordered him to be stationed in London. Determined to see combat, Conrad secretly exchanged identities with a Scottish soldier, Archie Reid, sending him to London and adopting the name "Lancelot" as a coded message to his father. Disguised as Reid, a member of the Black Guard, Conrad volunteered for a dangerous mission in no man's land to retrieve information from a wounded British agent.

Conrad managed to retrieve the information after briefly collapsing in the arms of the spy he carried toward British trenches. The spy died after absorbing almost all the energy of an explosion, which confirmed the authenticity of the Zimmermann Telegram. However, upon returning to British lines, a fellow soldier who knew Archie Reid accused him of being a German spy. As Conrad tried to explain, the soldier pointed a gun at his head.

As the war progressed, Orlando uncovered evidence that the assassination had been orchestrated by a clandestine group known as "The Flock," led by a mysterious figure called the Shepherd. The group sought to manipulate the German, Russian, and British empires into war for their own interests, including Scottish independence. Among the Shepherd's agents was the Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, who wielded influence over Tsar Nicholas II. Rasputin poisoned the Tsar's son, Alexei, and then cured him to coerce Nicholas into withdrawing Russia from the war.

Conrad learned of Rasputin's manipulations through his cousin, Prince Felix Yusupov, and relayed this information to Lord Kitchener and his aide-de-camp, Major Max Morton. Morton was dispatched to Russia aboard HMS Hampshire, but the ship was torpedoed and sunk, resulting in Kitchener's death. News of Kitchener's death prompted Orlando, accompanied by Shola, Polly, and Conrad, to travel to Russia, where they assassinated Rasputin after a prolonged struggle during a Christmas gathering hosted by Prince Felix.

It was on this occasion that Conrad discovered his father's spy network, orchestrated by both Orlando and the maid Polly, using the maids of all the important houses as reliable sources of information, since they themselves were essentially invisible in the houses.

Twelve years later, Conrad returned to the Oxford estate with his father. During that time, Orlando had established a secret private intelligence network with his servants, Shola and Polly Watkins, which operated discreetly on behalf of influential political figures across Europe. The now young Conrad longed to serve his country and fight in the escalating global conflict, but Orlando remained steadfast in his promise to Emily and forbade him from joining the British Army. He even went so far as to persuade the Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, to deny Conrad an officer commission.

At Kitchener's request, Conrad and Orlando accompanied Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, during a visit to Sarajevo. During the procession, Conrad intervened to save the Archduke from a bomb thrown by Gavrilo Princip. Despite this, Princip later stumbled upon the Archduke's entourage and assassinated both Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, an act that directly precipitated the outbreak of World War I.

Conrad Oxford was born in 1897 in Oxford, England, to Orlando and Emily Oxford. His parents were the Duke and Duchess of Oxford, but above all, they were involved with the Red Cross, helping those in need. In 1902, five-year-old Conrad was traveling with his parents and their bodyguard, Shola, to a camp to deliver supplies to the general and his troops. When the family arrived with the supplies, Conrad stayed in the carriage with Shola, waiting for his parents to finish discussing business. But before they could have a long conversation, a sniper began firing on the soldiers in the camp. One of the bullets struck Conrad's father in the middle of his thigh, forcing him to use a walking stick to walk properly.

While they were at the camp, a sniper launched an attack without warning. Conrad stayed near the supply wagon under Shola's protection as the gunfire erupted among the soldiers. During the attack, Lord Oxford was shot in the thigh, becoming permanently dependent on a walking stick. Shola pursued and apprehended the sniper, but not before a final shot was fired. This bullet struck Emily Oxford in the abdomen, mortally wounding her. She died soon after, having made Orlando promise that Conrad would never witness or participate in the war. Before Conrad could reach her, Orlando covered Emily's face with his jacket, shielding his son from the sight of her death.
