Brian had ended a relationship that had meant so much to him for a year. He had forgiven more than once. He had tried to believe things could be fixed, until he discovered the lies had never really ended. An affair with his childhood best friend finally made him put a stop to it.
The worst part was that she didn't seem to care. While she carried on with her life as if nothing had happened, Brian was left with a feeling he didn't know how to fill.

Claire looked at him curiously.

Brian let out a small laugh, although his eyes were still sad.

—Stay for another half hour.

She did not answer.

“Please,” he insisted. “Pretend this isn’t the same. That it’s different from the others.”

Claire understood then that Brian wasn't looking for fun. He was looking to forget.

—What happened?

He lowered his gaze.

—She's not coming back.

There was silence.

"Then stop waiting for her," Claire replied gently.

Brian took a deep breath.

—I don't want to remember her tonight.

She couldn't undo what had happened to him. But perhaps she could make sure that, for that half hour, Brian wouldn't feel completely alone.
