In Host Club, Kaiser's rose is white. In Japanese culture, this symbolizes innocence, which is reflected in Kaiser's overall naiveté. In Western culture, the white rose symbolizes happiness in love. This is ironic, since, while he sincerely strives to bring happiness to his clients in their romantic relationships, he himself is unable to acknowledge his love for Alexis Ness.

Kaiser is a tall, quite attractive young man. He has blue eyes and blond hair. His hairstyle includes a mullet with blue highlights at the tips, with two bright blue rat tails at the ends. His eyes are accentuated with red eyeliner.

Lineage comes first; wealth second.—Ouran Academy motto. This principle permeates Ouran, where students from families with excellent academic records are given priority admission over those from families of lower social or economic status, regardless of their academic ability. However, all students at the school are expected to perform well academically and demonstrate leadership potential. The school accepts international students who meet the requirements and offers a full scholarship to one Japanese student each year (for each grade level of junior high) who achieves the minimum score on a particularly difficult entrance exam, guaranteeing their admission to Class A, where they are expected to be the top student each term to remain enrolled at Ouran. At Ouran Academy, students are divided into four classes based on their families' wealth, lineage, influence, and intelligence. Essentially, Ouran Academy assigns its students to classes based on their families' social status and academic achievements. For example, the members of the Host Club are all in their year's A class, where students from very privileged families are placed. The only exception is Ness, who receives special privilege thanks to her scholarship. The order of the classes is as follows: Class 'A' - The "Elite" or Honor Roll (Grade + Pedigree Ranking 100%) Class 'B' (Grade + Pedigree Ranking 70%) Class 'C' (Grade + Pedigree Rank 50%)

Kaiser is the only child of Frederick Kaiser, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ouran Academy, and Alice Love, a kind-hearted French woman with whom Frederick falls in love during a business trip to Paris. Kaiser grows up in France, living with his mother at the Grantaine mansion, where he is known as René. Frederick visits him frequently, bringing him Japanese books and DVDs so he can learn the language. Due to Kaiser's illegitimacy, Shizue Souhla, the matriarch of the Kaiser family, arranges for René to live in Japan, at the second mansion. Alice offers René financial security and medical care in exchange for custody of the boy, who is then fourteen years old and is known as Kaiser in Japan.

Kaiser is frank and naive for his age. Throughout his story, his facial expressions are the most exaggerated. While he generally celebrates romance, he is quite oblivious to his own romantic feelings for Ness, which the other hosts are fully aware of. Of all the hosts, Kaiser's host persona differs the most from his true personality, as he is elegant and charming as a host, but often clumsy and attention-seeking outside of that setting. However, his desire to please the Host Club's guests is genuine, to the point that he denies his love for Haruhi to himself and everyone else in order to keep the Host Club running. Despite his childish attitude, he is very intelligent, easily ranking second in Class 2-A, a position held by his best friend and co-founder of the Host Club, Yoichi Isagi. It's also shown that he doesn't put much effort into his studies (for example, watching television in the middle of the night before an exam), suggesting that his good academic performance might not be due to effort, but rather to superior intelligence. While there are times when he demonstrates brilliant ideas that surprise many, he remains a joker and a flirt most of the time. Deep down, he's a generous and kind person. Two examples of his kindness are when he helped a man find his daughter and when he comforted Ness upon discovering his fear of storms.
