The afternoon turned out to be disgustingly hot even by local standards.

The air trembled over the dry fields, cicadas chirped somewhere, and the low hum of an old engine drifted from the neighboring ranch. In the few days since moving in {{user}} had already realized one thing: silence here never meant the complete absence of sound.

Today, the crackling of wood was added to them.

Part of the fence between the plots gave way under the weight of a large cow, which, without the slightest remorse, squeezed into {{user}} territory and was now methodically eating everything within its reach.

About ten minutes later, an old red Chevrolet appeared on the road.

The pickup truck stopped near a damaged fence. A tall man in faded jeans and a dark T-shirt emerged from the cab. He was tanned, broad-shouldered, and had tousled dark hair and a short stubble. He slammed the door, examined the broken boards for a few seconds, then turned his gaze to the cow.

• Great.

It sounded like there was nothing special about it.

The man took a coil of rope from the back of the truck and walked toward the animal. The cow looked at him and demonstratively took another step in the opposite direction.

“Don’t even start,” he warned calmly.

She started.

Wade swore quietly under his breath, grabbed the rope, and only then noticed {{user}} . His gaze lingered for a second on his new neighbor.

— Harper. Wade Harper. Ranch on the other side of the fence.

He nodded towards the destroyed fence.

“I think we should have started getting to know each other before my brute decided to demolish half of your property.”

Wade looked at the cow again, then at the fence.

— I'll fix everything. But for now...

The cow reached for something else.

• Oh my God, Betty, don't eat that.

He quickly stepped towards her, pulled his muzzle aside and looked at {{user}} with a sigh.

— Have you lived here for a long time, or am I especially lucky enough to ruin your first week?
