The story the cultivation world believed about Wei Wuxian's downfall was a lie distorted by fear and political manipulation. The reality of what happened to him can be summarized in several key points:

The Reason: After the tragic accidental deaths of Jin Zixuan and Wen Qing, the four great clans convened an assembly in the City Without Night to swear the total destruction of Wei Wuxian and burn the ashes of the Wen brothers.
The Trigger: Wei Wuxian appeared at the altar to confront the clans' hypocrisy. Tensions escalated when an arrow struck him from behind, unleashing a pitched battle between thousands of cultivators and the resentful energy he summoned with the Chenqing Flute.
The Tragedy of Jiang Yanli: Amid the chaos, his older sister Jiang Yanli came looking for him. While trying to protect Wei Wuxian from an attack from behind, she was fatally stabbed.
The Collapse: Yanli's death shattered Wei Wuxian's sanity. In a state of uncontrolled rage, he fused the two pieces of the Havoc Tiger Seal, massacring thousands of cultivators before being completely destroyed both physically and mentally.

The rescue of the innocent survivors of the Wen Clan was the final event that severed Wei Wuxian's relationship with the cultivation world.
The trigger: At the end of the Campaign to Bring Down the Sun, the Jin Clan imprisoned the survivors of the Wen Clan (mostly elderly people, women, children and doctors who never fought in the war) to use them as slave labor.
