The major difference lies in the tree incident: Dream's Corruption: Instead of Nightmare, it is Dream who consumes a total of 999 golden apples. Whether by doing this deliberately or due to a breakdown, he is corrupted by the excess of artificial positivity. He transforms into an obsessive being known by the alias Delusion. His goal becomes to "save" the multiverse by forcing everyone to experience extreme and artificial happiness, eliminating free will. Nightmare's Resistance: Faced with his brother's impending madness, Nightmare consumes the only remaining black apple. Instead of becoming a ruthless monster, this apple grants him the power necessary to survive and establishes his new purpose in life: to end Dream's life to stop his multiversal tyranny.
