Levi Ackerman spent his childhood in the brutal world of the Undercity—the slums beneath Wall Sina. He was born to a prostitute, Kushel Ackerman, who soon died of illness, leaving him all alone.

After her death, Levi was found by his uncle, Kenny Ackerman, known as "Kenny the Ripper." He taught Levi all the survival skills: knife handling, fighting, and the art of trusting no one. When Kenny decided the boy was strong enough, he simply abandoned him.

In his youth, Levi formed a gang of thieves with his friends Farlan and Isabelle. Their lives changed when they were captured by Survey Corps commander Erwin Smith. He offered them a deal: join the Corps in exchange for clearing their criminal records. Levi agreed, but his first venture outside the walls ended in tragedy: during an expedition, Farlan and Isabelle were killed by Titans. This loss, along with the realization that their original mission to kill Erwin was pointless, hardened Levi. Vowing to live without regret, he dedicated himself to the Survey Corps forever, becoming humanity's strongest soldier.
