Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a dark fantasy action series set in Japan during the Taishō era. The story follows humans who fight supernatural demons, creatures that were once human but have been transformed through the blood of Muzan Kibutsuji, the first and most powerful demon.
Demons possess supernatural strength, regeneration, heightened senses, and unique abilities called Blood Demon Arts. Most are vulnerable to sunlight and can be killed by special Nichirin swords wielded by the Demon Slayer Corps.

At the center of the story is Tanjiro Kamado, a kindhearted boy whose family is slaughtered by a demon. His younger sister Nezuko survives but is transformed into a demon. Rather than abandoning her, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps, hoping to find a way to turn her human again while hunting the demon responsible for destroying his family.

The series combines horror, action, comedy, tragedy, family, friendship, and supernatural fantasy. A major theme is that humanity can survive even terrible suffering through compassion and determination.

Breathing Styles: Water Breathing → Hinokami Kagura/Sun Breathing
Personality: Kind, compassionate, determined, observant, stubborn
Tanjiro is a teenage boy with a slim but increasingly athletic build. He has messy dark burgundy hair with reddish highlights and large dark-red eyes. His most recognizable feature is the distinctive scar on his forehead, which changes throughout the story.
He wears the standard Demon Slayer uniform beneath a green-and-black checkered haori, along with his Nichirin sword.
Tanjiro is exceptionally empathetic. Even while killing demons, he often recognizes that many of them were once human and suffered terribly before becoming monsters. However, his compassion doesn't make him weak—when someone threatens his family or innocent people, he becomes fiercely determined.
His greatest physical advantage is his extremely powerful sense of smell, allowing him to identify people, demons, emotions, injuries, and even openings in an opponent's attacks.

Personality: Gentle, protective, affectionate, occasionally playful
Nezuko was once a normal human girl who cared deeply for her family. After Muzan attacks the Kamado family, his blood transforms her into a demon.
Despite this, Nezuko refuses to prey upon humans. Through her own willpower and Urokodaki's conditioning, she instead protects humans and fights other demons. �
Kimetsu
She has long black hair that fades into orange around the ends, pinkish-red eyes, and a bamboo muzzle tied around her mouth. Her usual outfit consists of a pink kimono, dark haori, striped leg coverings, and sandals.
Unlike ordinary humans, Nezuko can manipulate her body as a demon, becoming stronger and altering her physical appearance when she needs more power.
Her relationship with Tanjiro is one of the emotional cores of the series. Even though she can no longer speak normally, her actions make it obvious how deeply she loves and protects her brother.

Breathing Style: Thunder Breathing
Personality: Nervous, loud, pessimistic, affectionate, surprisingly brave
Zenitsu has short, messy golden-yellow hair that fades toward orange near the ends. He has warm brown/golden eyes and wears the standard Demon Slayer uniform underneath a yellow-orange haori decorated with a triangular pattern.
At first, Zenitsu appears almost completely terrified of demons and constantly believes he's going to die.
However, his personality changes dramatically when he's pushed beyond his limits. When overwhelmed by fear, he can lose consciousness and fight using his incredible instinct and training. He possesses extraordinarily sensitive hearing, allowing him to distinguish different sounds and even perceive things about people's emotional states.

Despite his cowardice, Zenitsu genuinely cares about his friends and repeatedly proves that there's far more courage hidden beneath his panic.

Breathing Style: Beast Breathing
Personality: Aggressive, competitive, impulsive, proud, surprisingly sensitive
Inosuke is one of the most visually distinctive characters in the series.
He has a muscular, surprisingly beautiful youthful face hidden beneath a gray boar's head mask. Underneath the mask, he has pale skin, long black hair fading into blue at the tips, and enormous green eyes with unusually long eyelashes.
He was raised in the mountains and has an extremely wild personality. He constantly challenges people to fights and gives himself ridiculous titles.
His fighting style is equally unconventional. Rather than carefully following traditional swordsmanship, he developed Beast Breathing, a fighting style based on his instincts and animal-like movements. His extraordinarily sensitive sense of touch allows him to detect things around him even outside his normal field of vision.

Breathing Style: Water Breathing
Personality: Quiet, serious, reserved, compassionate underneath
Giyu is a tall, lean swordsman with messy black hair, deep blue eyes, and an expression that almost always appears serious or emotionless.
His haori is particularly recognizable because it is divided into two contrasting designs: one side is a muted red geometric pattern while the other is solid green.
Giyu is extremely quiet and often struggles to communicate his emotions. Despite his cold appearance, he is compassionate and willing to protect people who are helpless.
He is the first Demon Slayer to encounter Tanjiro and Nezuko and ultimately becomes the person who points Tanjiro toward the path of becoming a Demon Slayer. Giyu is the Water Hashira, one of the Corps' nine strongest swordsmen.

Title: Insect Hashira
Breathing Style: Insect Breathing
Personality: Cheerful, polite, intelligent, deceptively intimidating
Shinobu is petite with dark purple hair fading into lavender, usually tied back with a butterfly-shaped accessory. Her eyes are large and purple, with an unusual appearance because her pupils resemble the patterns of insects.
She wears a white butterfly-patterned haori over her Demon Slayer uniform.
Shinobu almost always wears a gentle smile and speaks politely, even to enemies. However, beneath that pleasant exterior is an enormous amount of anger and grief caused by demons.
Unlike many Demon Slayers, Shinobu doesn't possess the physical strength necessary to decapitate demons normally. Instead, she specializes in wisteria-based poisons, which she injects into demons through her uniquely designed sword.

Title: Flame Hashira
Breathing Style: Flame Breathing
Personality: Energetic, honorable, confident, compassionate
Rengoku is instantly recognizable thanks to his bright yellow hair with red flame-like tips, golden-red eyes, and extremely expressive face.
His white haori has a flame-like pattern around the bottom, reflecting his Flame Breathing.
Rengoku is loud, enthusiastic, and incredibly confident. He frequently speaks with tremendous energy and has an almost unshakable belief in doing what is right.
Despite his larger-than-life personality, he's extremely compassionate toward younger Demon Slayers and treats protecting others as a responsibility rather than a burden.
He is one of the nine Hashira—the strongest swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Corps.

Breathing Style: Love Breathing
Personality: Extremely affectionate, emotional, cheerful, energetic
Mitsuri has an unmistakable appearance: long pink hair fading into light green at the ends, large green eyes, and a very expressive face.
Her Demon Slayer uniform is unusually revealing compared with the standard uniform, and she wears a white haori.
Mitsuri is incredibly friendly and openly affectionate toward the people around her. She can become easily embarrassed and emotional, but this doesn't make her weak.
In fact, she possesses extraordinary physical strength and flexibility. Her unusual muscle composition gives her immense power while her Love Breathing takes advantage of her incredible flexibility and speed.

Breathing Style: Mist Breathing
Personality: Quiet, detached, absent-minded, extraordinarily talented
Muichiro is a young-looking Hashira with long black hair that fades into turquoise near the ends. His large turquoise eyes often appear distant or unfocused.
He tends to seem almost completely disconnected from what's happening around him. Muichiro can forget conversations, people, and even things that happened moments earlier.
Despite his seemingly indifferent personality, he is an extraordinarily talented swordsman. He became a Hashira at an incredibly young age.
His Mist Breathing style emphasizes deceptive movements, speed, and obscuring an opponent's perception.

Title: Sound Hashira
Breathing Style: Sound Breathing
Personality: Flashy, confident, dramatic, protective
Tengen is extremely tall and muscular, with white hair, red eyes, and jeweled accessories covering his head and arms.
He constantly describes himself as "flashy" and wants practically everything he does to be extravagant.
However, underneath his dramatic personality is an extremely capable and experienced warrior. He was formerly trained as a shinobi, giving him exceptional physical abilities and knowledge of explosives and stealth.

He uses a pair of enormous Nichirin blades connected by a chain rather than a traditional single sword.

Title: Wind Hashira
Breathing Style: Wind Breathing
Personality: Aggressive, hostile, stubborn, protective
Sanemi has spiky white hair, pale skin, sharp lavender eyes, and numerous scars covering his body.
He's one of the most aggressive Hashira and has an especially intense hatred of demons.
His rough personality can make him seem cruel, but much of his hostility comes from grief and his desire to protect the people he cares about.

Title: Stone Hashira
Breathing Style: Stone Breathing
Personality: Gentle, emotional, serious, deeply spiritual
Gyomei is an enormous, heavily muscular man who is blind. Despite his intimidating size, he's extremely gentle and compassionate.
He frequently cries during emotional moments and has a strong spiritual side.
His weapon is not a traditional sword. Instead, he uses an enormous flail and axe combination connected by a chain, making his fighting style completely different from the other Hashira.
He is generally regarded as one of the most physically powerful Demon Slayers.

Title: Serpent Hashira
Breathing Style: Serpent Breathing
Personality: Strict, suspicious, harsh, devoted
Obanai has black hair with uneven bangs, pale skin, and different-colored eyes. The lower half of his face is usually covered by bandages.
A small white snake named Kaburamaru frequently rests around his shoulders.
Obanai is extremely strict with other Demon Slayers and has little patience for incompetence. However, his harshness hides deep emotional struggles and a strong capacity for devotion.

Species: Demon
Personality: Manipulative, narcissistic, paranoid, ruthless
Muzan is the first demon and the source of the demon blood that created countless others.
He can change his appearance and frequently disguises himself as an ordinary human. One of his most recognizable appearances is a sophisticated man wearing a black suit and a white hat.
Unlike many demons, Muzan doesn't see himself as a monster. He considers himself superior to humans and other demons.
He is extraordinarily powerful, possessing incredible regeneration, physical strength, speed, shapeshifting abilities, and control over demons created from his blood.
His greatest fear is death, particularly the sunlight that can destroy him.

The Demon Slayer Corps is the organization dedicated to hunting demons.
Its hierarchy includes ordinary Demon Slayers and the elite Hashira, who are considered the Corps' strongest warriors. There are nine Hashira during the main story, each generally associated with a specialized Breathing Style.
The Corps also includes:
Kakushi — support members who clean up after battles and assist injured Demon Slayers.
Kasukabe/Kasugai Crows — messenger birds assigned to Demon Slayers.
Swordsmiths — craftsmen responsible for creating Nichirin weapons.
Wisteria Family Houses — safe locations where injured Demon Slayers can recover.
Kinoe through Mizunoto ranks — the ranking system for ordinary Demon Slayers.

👹 The Twelve Kizuki
The Twelve Kizuki are Muzan's strongest demons. They are divided into the Upper Ranks and Lower Ranks.
The Upper Ranks are vastly stronger than ordinary demons, with some having survived for centuries.
Notable members include:
🥇 Kokushibo — Upper Rank One
An incredibly powerful swordsman demon who uses Moon Breathing.
🥊 Akaza — Upper Rank Three
A martial-arts-focused demon obsessed with becoming stronger. He respects powerful opponents but despises weakness.
🎭 Doma — Upper Rank Two
A charismatic and disturbingly cheerful demon whose pleasant personality hides an extremely cruel nature.
🕷️ Gyutaro & Daki — Upper Rank Six
Sibling demons who operate together and have a particularly complicated relationship.
🕸️ Rui — Lower Rank Five
A childlike demon who creates a twisted "family" through fear and blood. He controls incredibly sharp spider threads.
🚂 Enmu — Lower Rank One
A sadistic demon who enjoys watching people suffer and uses dreams as his primary weapon

🩸 Muzan Kibutsuji
Muzan was originally a sickly human who lived more than a thousand years ago. He suffered from a disease that was expected to kill him before he reached adulthood. A doctor treated him with an experimental medicine made using the Blue Spider Lily.
Muzan became frustrated when the treatment didn't immediately work and killed the doctor. Only afterward did he discover that the medicine had transformed him into a demon.
Although he gained incredible strength and stopped aging, he discovered one major weakness: sunlight. He spent centuries trying to overcome it.
His fear of death and obsession with becoming a perfect immortal being eventually became the foundation of his entire existence.

❄️ Doma
Doma was born into a wealthy religious family and was treated as something almost divine because of his unusual rainbow-colored eyes.
His parents created a religious cult around him, believing he possessed supernatural insight.
The disturbing part is that Doma never actually felt the emotions everyone expected him to feel. He couldn't genuinely understand sadness, love, or empathy.
As a child, people constantly told him their problems, and he learned to imitate the emotions they wanted to see.
Eventually, Doma became the leader of the Eternal Paradise Faith.
He became a demon after encountering Muzan. As a demon, his lack of empathy became even more horrifying because he could commit terrible acts while remaining cheerful and seemingly friendly.

🥊 Akaza
Akaza's human name was Hakuji, and his childhood was incredibly tragic.
He grew up extremely poor and stole medicine for his sick father. Because of this, Hakuji was repeatedly beaten and punished.
Eventually, his father died by suicide because he didn't want his son to continue ruining his life trying to care for him.
Hakuji eventually became a fighter and was taken in by a martial artist named Keizo, who taught him martial arts.
Keizo also had a sick daughter named Koyuki. Hakuji fell in love with her and eventually became engaged to her.
For the first time, Hakuji had something resembling a happy family.
Then tragedy struck again.
Koyuki and Keizo were poisoned by a rival dojo. Hakuji completely lost control and slaughtered dozens of people from the rival dojo with his bare hands.
Muzan later encountered him and turned him into a demon.
As Akaza, Hakuji's memories became buried, but his obsession with strength and his hatred of weakness were deeply connected to his human life.

🌸 Rui
Rui was originally a very sick human child.
He spent most of his life bedridden and was extremely weak.
Muzan offered him his blood, turning him into a demon and giving him the healthy, powerful body he had always wanted.
However, Rui's parents were horrified when they discovered what their son had become.
Rui eventually killed them.
He later became obsessed with recreating the family he had lost, forcing other demons into roles such as "mother," "father," "siblings," and so on.
The tragedy is that Rui wanted the love and family connection he had once possessed—but he tried to obtain it through fear and violence.

🕷️ Gyutaro & Daki
The siblings were originally Gyutaro and Ume, born into extreme poverty in the Entertainment District.
Gyutaro was considered ugly and was bullied relentlessly. He grew up surrounded by cruelty and learned to survive through violence.
His younger sister Ume was beautiful and became a courtesan.
Gyutaro was extremely protective of her because she was essentially the only person who genuinely cared about him.
When Ume was still young, she was horribly injured as punishment after attacking a customer.
Gyutaro found her nearly dead.
He desperately carried her through the streets while begging for help.
Nobody came.
Eventually, Daki and Gyutaro encountered Doma, who offered to turn them into demons.
They accepted.
Their relationship became one of the strongest examples of the series' recurring theme: humans who became monsters because they desperately wanted to keep the people they loved.

🌙 Kokushibo
Kokushibo was originally Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the older twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni.
Yoriichi was extraordinarily talented from birth and became the greatest swordsman of his era.
Michikatsu desperately wanted to surpass his younger brother.
Despite training incredibly hard, he could never escape Yoriichi's shadow.
This jealousy became one of the defining parts of Michikatsu's life.
He eventually became a Demon Slayer and developed Moon Breathing, but he still couldn't reach Yoriichi's level.
Terrified of growing old and dying while Yoriichi continued to exist as the stronger swordsman, Michikatsu accepted Muzan's offer to become a demon.
He became Kokushibo, Upper Rank One.
Even after centuries as a demon, his obsession with surpassing his brother never truly disappeared.

🎭 Enmu
Enmu's backstory is much less tragic than some of the Upper Moons.
Even before becoming a demon, he apparently had a disturbing personality and enjoyed manipulating people.
As a demon, he became obsessed with dreams because they allowed him to psychologically torment his victims.
Rather than simply killing people, Enmu enjoyed watching them experience emotional suffering.
His Blood Demon Art allows him to manipulate dreams, making him particularly dangerous because his victims can be completely unaware that they're under attack.

🩷 Nezuko
Nezuko is technically a demon, but her story is very different.
Before becoming a demon, she lived happily with her mother and siblings in the mountains.
Her family was extremely poor, but they were close.
One day, Muzan attacked their home and killed almost everyone.
Nezuko survived, but Muzan's blood transformed her into a demon.
Instead of becoming like the other demons, however, Nezuko retained her attachment to her family.
Her bond with Tanjiro became strong enough that she resisted her demonic instincts and eventually became one of the few demons capable of living without consuming humans.
