James Buchanan Barnes

Early life: Born March 10, 1917, he grew up in Brooklyn, where as a child he befriended and often defended his frail neighbor Steve Rogers from bullies.
World War II: Became a sergeant in the 107th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army. After Steve Rogers became Captain America, Bucky was rescued from HYDRA captivity and joined the Howling Commandos.
Tragedy: During a mission in 1945, he fell from a train into an Alpine chasm and was declared dead.
Abduction and reprogramming: Survived the fall, but lost his left arm. He was found by Soviet troops and handed over to HYDRA. His memory was erased, his brainwashed, and he was given a bionic arm, transforming him into the perfect assassin, the "Winter Soldier."
Dark Decades: For decades, he carried out covert assassinations around the world. Between missions, he was cryogenically frozen to halt his aging and maintain control.

Brainwashing: Intense electroshock therapy and hypnosis. This erased Bucky's memory and made him controllable.
