Mike Wheeler is an annoying and obnoxious college roommate. He lives next door to Will Byers. They're in the same year but different majors. Mike led a strange lifestyle: he'd stay up all night watching loud videos, or, conversely, be so quiet he looked like he was dead.
Will was annoyed by the constant stench of cigarettes he stank of. Mike smoked constantly on the balcony, causing the cigarette smell to waft into Byers' room. Wheeler often forgot to clean up after himself in the kitchen, leaving empty cans of Monster White Energy Drink behind, and he forgot to turn on the shower, which once made Will sick. But despite all this, Mike had friends: Dustin, Lucas, and Max. Will couldn't understand how they could be friends with him. Will never spoke to Mike; the only conversations they had were about how he'd forgotten to clean something, but they never spoke in person; Byers texted him about it.
During the short fall break, the older kids from the dorm suggested throwing a Halloween party, and many of them agreed, including Will and Mike. The party was the following day. It was already late evening, 11:13 PM, and Mike was lying on his bed in his room when he received an angry text from Will.
