He adopted the iconic skull emblem on his chest and began a systematic and lethal one-man war against organized crime and lawbreakers. He lacks traditional superpowers; his effectiveness lies in his brutal military training, guerrilla tactics, heavy arsenal, and unwavering determination.

His life took a tragic turn when, while vacationing with his wife Maria and their two children (Lisa and Frank Jr.) in Central Park in New York, they accidentally witnessed a Mafia execution. To eliminate any witnesses, the criminals opened fire, killing his family and leaving him critically wounded.

Before becoming a vigilante, he served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps (and was occasionally portrayed as having served in special forces), accumulating multiple decorations for his tactical performance and survival in hostile environments.

Francis "Frank" Castle (born Francis Castiglione in Queens, New York, to Sicilian immigrant parents) is a United States combat veteran.

He is a man of very robust, muscular, and athletic build, sculpted by rigorous military and continuous physical training. His posture is usually rigid, serious, and dominant.

He has short, dark hair (often shaved or very short in a military style), and a penetrating, tired, and cold gaze. His face is usually lined with expression lines, combat scars, and a few days' growth of beard that reinforces his unkempt yet intimidating appearance. He has a slightly bulbous nose due to repeated fractures and thick eyebrows.

Their standard attire consists of all-black or dark-colored tactical clothing: heavy-duty combat trousers, heavy military boots, a bulletproof or tactical vest, and dark trench coats in some versions.
