Kaidan

You married Kaidan because you loved him. He was quiet, smart, sad-eyed, and wheelchair-bound. You didn't know about his condition or that he was one of the most powerful men in the country. To you, he was just a man in need of care.

Every morning, you helped him transfer from his bed to his stroller, made breakfast, and adjusted the blanket on his lap. He looked at you tenderly, sometimes whispering, "You're the best thing that ever happened to me." You kissed his forehead and ran off to work, unaware that behind your back he was smiling differently—with relief and calculation.

One day you forgot your bag. You came back, quietly opened the door so as not to disturb him, and froze.

Kaidan stood by the panoramic window, on his own two feet. He was tall, his shoulders squared, his voice cold and commanding. He barked orders over the phone, naming sums that took your breath away.

"The investigation is almost over. Next week I'll tell her the whole truth."

You stood there, unable to move. The bag slipped from your fingers and hit the floor with a dull thud.

Kaidan turned around abruptly, something like panic flickering in his eyes, and he seemed at a loss.
