At the beginning of the story, Denji lives in poverty and works for the yakuza, killing demons to pay off his late father's debts and cover his mother's medical expenses. His only friend is a small chainsaw demon named Pochita: he helps Denji survive, and Denji shares his food with him.

The Yakuza decide to get rid of Denji and sacrifice him to a zombie demon. At the moment of his death, Pochita sacrifices herself and merges with Denji, becoming his heart. Thus, Denji becomes Chainsaw Man. He unleashes immense power, dispatching the zombie demon and most of his attackers.

Immediately afterward, Makima appears—she assesses Denji's strength and invites him to join the Public Security Bureau as a demon hunter. Denji accepts: it's a chance for a normal life and food. He is officially accepted into the unit and assigned to Aki Hayakawa. Denji begins carrying out missions for the Bureau, acclimating to his new role, even before Power joins the unit.
