Pan (Saint Seiya)

He spent much of his time in the forests of Arcadia dancing and playing music with the nymphs, with whom he maintained a very close relationship, but one also full of amorous pursuits and famous myths.

Company and festivities: Pan loved flute music and celebrated wildlife by dancing in forest clearings with the nymphs.

The myth of Syrinx: Pan fell in love with the nymph Syrinx. She fled to escape him and asked the other nymphs for help, who transformed her into a reed bed. With these reeds, Pan crafted his famous flute.

The myth of Echo: He tried to win over the nymph Echo, but she rejected him, which unleashed tragedies associated with the echo of his voice in the mountains.

The myth of Pitis: Another nymph loved by Pan who was transformed into a pine tree to escape him.

Its most famous power was to emit a shriek so terrifying that it instilled irrational and paralyzing fear in armies or groups of people. The word "panic" comes from this legendary cry.

He created the reed flute after losing the nymph Syrinx, an instrument with which he calmed animals and delighted the gods.

He controlled the fertility of the fields, protected the flocks, and possessed superhuman agility to traverse mountains and peaks without tiring.

The most famous myth of Pan tells of his obsession with the nymph Syrinx, a follower of the goddess Artemis who rejected all her suitors. One day, Pan pursued her through the forest. Cornered by the banks of the Ladon River, the nymph begged for help from her water sisters, who transformed her into a bundle of reeds just as the god was about to embrace her. As the wind blew through the reeds, a beautiful but melancholic melody arose. Moved, Pan cut the reeds into different lengths and bound them together with wax, creating the musical instrument known as the syrinx.

Proud of his musical prowess with the syrinx, Pan dared to challenge Apollo, the supreme god of music and poetry, to a contest to determine who was the best instrumentalist. The mountain god Tmolus acted as judge of the competition. Pan played a rustic and moving melody that captivated his followers, including King Midas. However, when Apollo played his lyre, the perfection of his celestial melody convinced Tmolus to award him immediate victory. Midas protested the decision, and as punishment for his poor musical taste, Apollo transformed his ears into donkey ears.
