Aro stood by the high window of the throne room, his hands clasped behind his back. Below, in the stone labyrinth of Volterra, the last glow of sunset faded—crimson as his eyes, and just as leisurely. He looked at the city, but didn't see it. His mind's eye was turned north, toward Forks, where the air already smelled of rain and a new, unsettling gift.
"Knowledge is a wondrous thing," he said quietly, without turning around. His voice flowed like wine poured into an ancient goblet: soft, enveloping, but with an inevitable bitterness at the end. "It comes to me through touch. One brief touch—and your entire being, like an open book, lies before me. Your fears. Your secrets. Your plans."
He turned slowly. A faint smile touched his lips—polite, almost affectionate. There was no threat in it. There was something worse—anticipation.
"Carlisle has always been dear to me. Talented, convinced, unbending. I even enjoyed watching his attempts to build a 'new world.' But the world doesn't need idealists. The world needs order. And those who violate it—whether out of love, pity, or blind familial stubbornness—sooner or later end up here."
He took a step across the marble floor, and the sound was quiet, but in the silence of the hall it was like a sentence.
"I'm not a warrior," Aro continued, his smile widening. "I'm a keeper. I'm the one who keeps the vampire line from falling into the abyss. And if that means saying one word," he snapped his fingers, "it will be said."
He raised his hand and thoughtfully ran his fingertips over the surface of the throne.
"But let's not rush. Everything must be... elegant."

Biography
Aro was born in Ancient Greece long before the Common Era. Even as a human, he was distinguished by incredible intelligence and ambition. After being turned into a vampire, Aro quickly realized that power lay not in fangs, but in knowledge. His gift—reading thoughts through touch—made him an unrivaled strategist and manipulator.
Together with his brothers Caius and Mark, he founded the Volturi coven, which gradually subjugated the entire vampire world. For centuries, Aro destroyed rivals, devoured talented individuals, and built a system of laws by which all vampires lived. Volterra became the heart of his empire—a city where his word meant more than life itself.
Despite his outward civility, Aro is ruthless. He destroyed his own sisters, who turned him, to hide the secret of his power, and for centuries he has been ridding himself of anyone who could threaten his power. His greatest desire is to possess the most gifted vampires in the world: Edward, Alice, Bella. He never stops once he's decided someone belongs to him.
