Muzan Kibutsuji was a weak and sickly young man from the Heian period who was diagnosed with a life expectancy before the age of 20. After receiving experimental treatment with the blue spider lily from a kind doctor, he killed the doctor in a fit of rage upon noticing his deteriorating health, unaware that he would become the first demon, immortal but vulnerable to sunlight. Origin and Transformation: He was born ill, suffering cardiac arrests in the womb. He took the experimental medicine based on the blue spider lily. He murdered the doctor before realizing that the cure granted him superhuman strength in exchange for consuming human flesh.
Consequences and Obsession: Sunlight became his mortal weakness. He created other demons to find the missing blue spider lily and conquer the sun. His quest unleashed centuries of death and the creation of the Twelve Demon Moons.

Enmu (Waning Moon 1): The strongest of this group; capable of manipulating dreams and merging with a train. Hairo (Waning Moon 2): Appears in alternate stories; an expert in shadow weapons. Mukago (Waning Moon 3): A demon with a childlike appearance and a great fear of the Pillars. Wakuro (Waning Moon 4): Possessed mystical abilities with dice and demon blood. Rui (Waning Moon 5): The famous demon of Mount Natagumo who used sharp threads. Kamanue/Kyogai (Waning Moon 6): The weakest, dismissed or replaced due to his slow growth (Kyogai appeared at the beginning of the series).

Upper Moon 1: Kokushibo — The strongest demon in the group. He uses Moon Breathing and was a Demon Slayer in his human life, being the twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Upper Moon 2: Doma — A charismatic, nihilistic demon and leader of a religious cult. He controls deadly ice with his blood and is extremely ruthless. Upper Moon 3: Akaza — A martial artist obsessed with becoming stronger and perfecting his hand-to-hand combat technique, with a deep personal code of honor. Upper Moon 4: Hantengu (and Nakime) — Hantengu is an old and cowardly demon whose emotions manifest in powerful avatars; After her death, Nakime takes this rank using her ability with the Infinite Dimensional Fortress. Upper Moon 5: Gyokko — A twisted being obsessed with a grotesque concept of "art," capable of teleporting between vessels and using lethal fish poisons. Upper Moon 6: Gyutaro and Daki — Brothers who share the position of the sixth moon in the Red Light District; Daki manipulates deadly obi sashes and Gyutaro fights with poisonous sickles propelled at great speed.

Extreme egocentrism: He proclaims himself a perfect and superior being, viewing humans as mere resources and his own demons as disposable tools. Paranoia and obsession: His transformation originally occurred while trying to avoid death from an illness in the Heian period. Since then, his fear of perishing and his quest for the "perfect body" dictate all his actions. Emotional instability: Although usually calm, he is very short-tempered. He may murder or brutally punish his subordinates for the slightest mistake or for comments that wound his pride.

Appearance: Having complete control over his biology, Muzan changes his appearance to evade the Demon Slayers. He has been seen in multiple forms: Businessman: His most iconic human form is that of a handsome young man with extremely pale skin, slanted red eyes, and wavy black hair. He wears an elegant suit: a white fedora with a dark band, a white tie, and a dark overcoat. Elegant Woman: He takes the form of a beautiful woman with fair skin, wearing a long kimono or yukata, a seductive voice, and long hair. Child: He disguises himself as a sick child adopted by an elderly family, wearing a cap and casual clothes to blend in. Demonic Form: In his battle-ready state or when cornered, his body mutates: his hair grows completely white, several toothy mouths appear on his torso and limbs, and his muscle mass increases considerably.
