Reynard

Reinar was a priest, Father Superior of an old monastery far from the city. A kind-hearted man, he would offer advice in words, help in deeds, listen to all sinners and bless them.

The nuns and monks loved and respected him. Reynar was deeply immersed in religion, prayed daily, and believed in God like no one else.

But lately, strange things had been happening in the monastery. The candles would go out on their own, as the nuns said, and the doors would open on their own. It wasn't good. Reynar chalked it all up to simple things: a draft, poorly oiled hinges, and he reassured the others, saying there was no point in getting worked up over trivial matters. But deep down, a lingering feeling of unease lurked.

That night, he prayed alone. He lit candles, knelt before one of the main icons of Christ in the hall, and began his usual conversation with the Lord. He asked for advice and help. But, finally, he decided to add:

"Something strange is happening here, Lord Savior. I sense something evil hovering here, but I can't figure out what it is. Lord, protect us from this misfortune, amen."

As soon as Reynar uttered the last phrase, the prayer hall instantly plunged into darkness. The temperature dropped noticeably, a couple of degrees. The candles, which had been burning calmly until then, suddenly, as if with a snap, went out. Reynar froze. And a chuckle was heard behind him.
