Gen likes video games, online shopping, ego surfing, freedom, and small spaces.
When chapter 38 was published, Gen's surname was mistakenly translated as Okonogi by the translators. This mistranslation was later corrected to Narumi.
Gen owns a BS5 and an action figure named "Gundom" (ガンドム, Gandomu), clear references to a PlayStation 5 and the Gundam series. He also owns a PC with a piece of fruit on the back and appears to have many Yamazon packages in his apartment, references to Apple and Amazon.
Gen ranked number 2 in the first character popularity polls.
Although his age has not yet been officially revealed, it is most likely that Gen is younger than Mina Ashiro, who is 27 years old, since they both joined the Defense Force around the same time, after Mina graduated from high school while Gen was still a student.

Combat Suit (formerly): On the battlefield, Gen wears a standard Defense Forces combat suit.

Gas mask: Gen's combat suit includes a gas mask that covers the entire face.

Bayonet: Marked GS-3305 and supplied by Izumo Tech, Gen's personal weapon is a large double-bladed bayonet attached to a rifle.

Respiratory mask: Gen uses a respiratory mask in combat.

Numbers Weapon 1 (1, Nanbāzu Ichi-gō): Gen's personal Numbers Weapon, provided by Izumo Tech, is a special combat suit fabricated from the corpse of Kaiju No. 1, making it the oldest Numbers Weapon in the Japan Self-Defense Force. [12] This suit, which has a dark gray, armor-like texture and includes a black and gray jacket, has multiple integrated eyes that allow it to predict the movements of more than one target by reading electrical signals within the body.

Outer Layer Light Goggles: [5] Marked RT-0001 (-0001, Retina-0001) and provided by Izumo Tech, Gen's second personal weapon is a pair of outer layer light goggles made from the retina of Kaiju No. 1. [12] This weapon grants him the ability to visualize the brain signals of a living being and predict its movements before it makes them. [19] Repeated use of this weapon causes his eyes to bleed. [20] During his fight against Kaiju No. 11, Gen revealed that he evolved his RT-0001 weapon, which now allows him to perceive the movements of electrons, temperature fluctuations, terrain, and every detail of a location with eyes around his body, making it possible to predict what is happening through clear mental vision.

Gen's fighting style is called Squadron Bayonet Technique (銃剣術, Jūken-jutsu). [19] He uses his bayonet to stab kaiju with tremendous force, [6][16][20] or to slash and shoot his enemies simultaneously in waves.

Number One: Eruption Cut (1式: 炸裂斬, Isshiki: Sakuretsu ki): Gen attacks his enemy with many frontal cuts and gun shots at the same time.
Number two: Slash Salvo (2式: 斬募砲火, Nishiki: Ki Tsuno Hōka): Gen runs past his enemy at extremely high speeds while simultaneously slashing and shooting them.
Number three: Thunder Fire (3式: 雷火, Sanshiki: Raika):

Presumably his most powerful attack; Gen slices his enemy in such a way that it branches out in seven different directions, resembling the Seven-Branched Sword while causing explosions in its path. [7] This attack is so powerful that it is shown to extend upwards into the sky, surpassing the height of the surrounding buildings.

Bayonet Mastery: Gen is extremely skilled in using his bayonet to kill kaiju, as shown when he single-handedly defeats a large honju-level kaiju with a strength level of 7.2 with great ease. [6] He uses the blade to cut and burn through a kaiju's body, making it very difficult for them to regenerate. [12] He is shown to be a master marksman, capable of shooting his enemies with deadly accuracy and precision. [12] [19] He also uses his bayonet as a shield to defend himself from attacks.
Martial Arts Proficiency: Gen has been an incredibly skilled athlete and martial artist since childhood. [5][10] After joining the Defense Force, he was trained by Isao Shinomiya in various forms of combat, including hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, and marksmanship. His hand-to-hand combat skills are said to rival those of Soshiro Hoshina, "The Strongest Hand-to-Hand Combatant in the Defense Force."
Leadership skills: As captain, Gen has demonstrated excellent leadership skills on the battlefield despite his lazy and childish personality, giving orders to his division with absolute authority.
Sharp intellect: Gen is a very intelligent person despite his childlike and eccentric nature. He earned high academic marks in school during his adolescence and in the Armed Forces, placing him at the top of his class. [5] In combat, even during a major crisis, he manages to think clearly to obtain valuable information about the battlefield and enemy movements.

His reflexes are also top-notch, as he is able to dodge Kaiju No. 9's high-speed attacks, even when it takes him by surprise. [16]
Enhanced Durability: Gen is an incredibly resilient fighter, as demonstrated when he emerges completely unscathed from a powerful attack by Kaiju No. 9. [12] Even after No. 9 absorbed the power of Kaiju No. 2, he sustained only minor injuries during the fight. [20] In his battle against Kaiju No. 11, Gen sustained only moderate injuries from its water-based attacks. [21]
Immense Stamina: Gen possesses tremendous levels of physical stamina and endurance. After fifteen minutes of a full-throttle Numbers Weapon 1 blast, and even near overheating, Gen is able to withstand multiple water-based attacks from Kaiju No. 11, as well as a powerful blow from the monster itself that sent him flying through a building, sustaining severe injuries and still being able to fight. [21][8][14] Even under the immense physical and mental stress of Numbers Weapon 1, Gen continues to fight despite being severely injured.

Premonition: Gen awakened the RT-0001 weapon after regularly equipping himself with the outer-casing light goggles made from the retinas of Kaiju No. 1. [11] With this weapon, he has the ability to see brain impulses in the bodies of living beings, allowing him to predict when and where an enemy will attack, making his attacks "inevitable." [19] However, he cannot predict the movements of non-organic objects such as water. [21] This power is further enhanced when he wears the Numbers Weapon 1 combat suit. [22] After years of training, Gen managed to evolve his RT-0001 weapon, which is now capable of perceiving electron movements, temperature fluctuations, terrain, and every detail of a location through the eyes surrounding his Numbers Weapon 1 combat suit, allowing him to predict what is happening through clear mental vision. With his evolved weapon, he literally has the power to see the future. [7]
High Unleashed Combat Power: As a captain in the Defense Force, Gen is able to use a large amount of his combat suit's power. When he joined the Defense Force, his unleashed combat power was 24%, despite never having worn a combat suit before. [5] Years later, after achieving the rank of captain, his maximum unleashed combat power in a standard Defense Force combat suit is 98%. [12]
Enhanced Strength: Gen possesses incredible physical strength; he can wield his large bayonet in combat with skill [12] and cut through the tough hide of a daikaiju with ease. [12] [16] [20] [14]
Immense speed and reflexes: Gen is extremely fast; his speed is so great that his attacks become "inevitable" when he uses RT-0001, [19][16] and he is shown to outspeed Kafka Hibino in his kaiju form when he runs to help Isao Shinomiya in his fight against Kaiju No. 9.

General Abilities: Gen is the captain of the First Division of the Defense Force, the strongest division, and is known as "Japan's strongest anti-kaiju fighter."

Although he holds the title of "the strongest," Gen was never able to defeat his former mentor, Isao Shinomiya. [14] The reason is that Isao recognized that Gen's skill level would surpass his own and continued to train him relentlessly to remain a "wall" that Gen could one day overcome.

During his battle against the Beta duplicate of Kaiju No. 9 (which the original No. 9 claimed was as strong as before shedding its skin), Gen easily defeated the daikaiju clone once it got serious[19] and was able to fight on par with the main body of No. 9 alongside Kafka Hibino after it absorbed the power of Kaiju No. 2.[16][20] While initially at a disadvantage against Kaiju No. 11 due to his inability to read the movements of its water-based attacks, after being provoked by No. 11 possessing Isao's memories, Gen reveals that he evolved his weapon RT-0001, allowing him to gain the upper hand[14][7] and defeat the monster.

Even before joining the Defense Force, Gen possessed the unique ability to draw energy from kaiju tissue and effortlessly weaponize the severed limb of a slain kaiju. This unique ability can only be achieved with organs adapted for use in combat suits. His instincts, speed, and reflexes were sharp enough to dodge a direct attack and sever one of the kaiju's limbs before it could react.

Despite his serious demeanor, Gen hides a lazy and childish personality, overreacting to the slightest annoyance. His unprofessional behavior leads him to prioritize trivial things over work, such as his video games and action figures, [6] or his social media followers.

However, once he arrives on the battlefield, Gen's attitude changes radically, becoming very serious and dedicated to his work as captain of his own division, giving specific orders to his subordinates.

When dealing with others, Gen appears to be very informal and rude, speaking disdainfully to Director-General Isao Shinomiya [5] and becoming angry with Eiji Hasegawa whenever he is reprimanded. [6] He seems to value skills above all else and demands results from anyone serving in his division. [2] Despite his childish and superficial behavior, Gen is still highly regarded by many people close to him, and Director-General Isao himself entrusts him with the safety of the Armed Forces and the entire country.

Like most members of the First Division, Gen has a strong rivalry with the Third Division, specifically with vice-captain Soshiro Hoshina, who often teases him in front of his subordinates, leading to verbal arguments.

Gen is a tall, athletic young man with a lean but muscular build. [12] His hair is naturally black, [10] but he dyed the front section gray to give it a two-tone look. This allows him to change his hairstyle between a black bob with gray highlights (usually when off duty) and slicked back, revealing most of his gray hair (primarily during combat). He also has piercing red eyes (magenta in the anime and when using RT-0001) and very short, bushy eyebrows.

When he was a teenage officer in the First Division, Gen was shorter and thinner than he is now, but he sported the same signature hairstyle he wears today. [14]

As captain of the Defense Force, Gen wears the standard Defense Force combat suit with a breathing mask and his personal weapon. He also wears a black trench coat before his missions. [2] When using Weapon Number 1, Gen dons a dark gray, armor-like combat suit with the Izumo Tech logo on the shoulder pads and the 001 insignia on the chest. The suit also includes a black and gray jacket.
