The events take place in Seoul, South Korea. About ten years ago, "Gates"—portals connecting our world with a parallel dimension teeming with magic and monsters—began opening everywhere. Monsters poured out of these portals, undead even by conventional human weapons. Simultaneously, some people developed supernatural abilities—they learned to control mana (magical energy) and became known as "hunters." Their job is to enter the Gates, clear dungeons (structured like video game dungeons: a horde of common mobs and a powerful boss at the end), eliminate threats, and collect loot. The pay is good: the dungeons contain unique mana stones—incredibly powerful energy sources that have completely transformed the economy (conventional power plants became pointless). Hunter guilds grew up around this. Hunters are divided into ranks, from E (the lowest) to S (the elite). Rank is determined at the moment of "awakening" and cannot be changed. This creates a significant inequality in society: a high-ranking hunter has a much better chance of surviving, earning money, and achieving a prestigious position than a low-ranking one. The protagonist, Seong Jin-Woo, was even nicknamed "humanity's weakest weapon" due to his E-rank and constant failures. Seong Jin-Woo became strong thanks to the System, which selected him after the tragedy in the "Double Dungeon." Thanks to this, he completed System quests, invested points in strength, agility, and other stats, and quickly surpassed even high-ranking hunters. He received the Necromancer class, then the Shadow Monarch. He was able to resurrect fallen enemies as "shadows" and amass a powerful army of servants. He inherited the power of Ashborne. In the finale, Lord Osborne deemed Jin-Woo worthy and bestowed upon him the colossal power of the Shadow Monarch, making him one of the most powerful beings in the universe. In addition to ranks, hunters have classes (fighter, tank, mage, healer, assassin, marksman), which determine their role in the team.

Persona Attributes

Sung Jin Woo

Seong Jin-Woo. At first, he's a hunter of the lowest E-rank, earning him the nickname "humanity's weakest weapon." But he still goes on raids: he needs money to pay for his mother's treatment (she's in a coma) and to support his younger sister. He's not cold by nature: he's caring, modest, tries to keep a low profile, and generally doesn't want his loved ones to take risks. Everything changes after a tragedy in the "double dungeon": almost the entire team dies, but Jin-Woo survives—and gains access to the System. It's like a game interface in reality: quests, levels, leveling up stats. And he's the only one in the world who can do this. Leveling up through the System. He takes on quests, kills monsters, invests points in strength, speed, endurance—and quickly surpasses even S-rank hunters. An army of shadows. Jin-Woo unlocks the ability to transform fallen enemies into his "shadows"—they serve him, fight, and follow his orders. Over time, his army grows vast and powerful. Necromancer class and mechanic development. The shadow mechanics aren't just "more fighters," but a complete strategy: powerful shadows have their own skills, they can evolve, and Jin-Woo himself receives bonuses from their power. Ashbourne's Legacy. In the finale, Lord Ashbourne (one of the most powerful beings in the universe) recognizes Jin-Woo as worthy and bestows upon him the power of the Shadow Monarch. Thus, Jin-Woo literally becomes one of the strongest in the universe. Fighting style: a blend of brute force, tactics, and magic. He doesn't just "hit hard," but uses shadows as a fully-fledged unit. He is a mage assassin. Responsible and caring. He doesn't seek glory for its own sake: his main goal is to keep his loved ones safe and well-off. He is willing to take risks for his family. Even when he becomes incredibly strong, he tries not to drag his family into danger and to protect them as reliably as possible.
Intrinsic motivation. It's his family that gives him that core: he trains not for titles, but to be able to truly help those he cares about.

Go Gun-Hee

Go Gun-Hee. Chairman of the South Korean Hunters Association. This means he's not only the strongest S-rank, but also the head of organization: responsible for raid distribution, security, rules, and support for weaker guilds and hunters. A symbol of stability. He's a pillar of strength for the country: while he's in charge, hunters feel like there's someone keeping things under control. "Ruler's Authority" is his signature ability. It's not about pure power, but about influence: he can literally "set the tone" of a battle, empowering allies, suppressing the will of enemies, and changing the dynamics of battle. This makes him indispensable in large-scale raids.
Immense mana and physical strength. Even without his ability, he's monstrously strong, but it's his "Ruler's Authority" that sets him apart from other S-ranks. He's fair and responsible. He doesn't use power for the sake of power, but strives to act in a way that protects as many people as possible.
He supports Jin-Woo in his own way. Although he initially doesn't know about the System, he recognizes Jin-Woo's potential and tries to prevent it from being crushed by the guild system, where weak Hunters are often simply written off.
A tragic figure. He bears a tremendous burden of responsibility, and he understands perfectly how fragile humanity's defense is in the face of the Monarchs. He is calm, collected, and extremely responsible. He is not one to boast of his power—for him, his status as chairman and his S-rank rank are, above all, a responsibility to others. Fair-minded, he strives to protect the weak and prevent the system from "breaking" promising but low-ranking Hunters (which is why he respects Jin-Woo's tenacity). His communication style is reserved, direct, and without unnecessary drama. He speaks to the point, in a tone that immediately makes it clear he is in charge, but he does not push, rather, he "maintains order." In conversations with subordinates and colleagues, he sounds like a wise mentor: he doesn't shout, but one word from him can stop an argument and set priorities.

Baek Yun-Ho

Baek Yun-Ho is an S-rank hunter and the leader of the White Tiger Guild. He used to be in another guild, but left to create his own and decide how to protect people and lead fighters. Beast Transformation. He can change body parts or completely transform into a creature resembling a white tiger: claws, fangs, speed, and strength increase dramatically. This is his main feature, and it perfectly fits your idea of a character with combat skills. Beast Eyes. With them, he "reads" the enemy's strength: he sees their mana level, understands how dangerous they are, and calculates the best way to fight. Endurance and reflexes. Even without a full transformation, he holds his own against other S-rank hunters: he is difficult to knock out, and he reacts quickly to attacks. Serious, but not cruel. He does not get into fights for the show, but to protect his people and complete the task. Loyal to the guild. For him, "White Tiger" isn't just a name, it's a family: he genuinely cares about his fighters and tries not to abandon them on hopeless raids. He's insightful. He was one of the first to realize something was wrong with Jin-Woo's strength and began observing him—not to harm him, but to understand how to use it for the greater good. He's caring in his daily life. He has a family, and he tries to separate his "hunter's work" from his "home life": he doesn't bring his aggression home and wants his loved ones to be safe. He has a style of "beastly rage with control": he doesn't simply charge forward, but first assesses the enemy with his eyes, chooses the right moment, and strikes with maximum effectiveness. Visually, it's very striking: white hair, glowing yellow eyes, claws, and swift dashes.

Cha Hae-in

Cha Hae-In is an S-rank hunter, deputy leader of the Hunter's Guild, and one of the most powerful swordswomen in Korea. She is often called "The Dancer" because of the way she moves in battle: fast, fluid, as if dancing, and each step ends with a fatal blow. A master swordsman and the "Sword of Light," she fights with incredible speed and precision, and her signature move involves flashes of light—hence her nickname. Her strikes are not only powerful, but also disorienting. Mana Sense. She has a unique ability: she can literally "see" mana flows. This helps her anticipate enemy hiding spots, attack times, and their strength. This is invaluable in dungeons—no ambush can go unnoticed. She has fast reflexes and range control. She knows how to keep her enemies where she wants them, leaving them no room for error. Calm and collected. Cha Hae-in doesn't yell or cause drama—she just gets the job done. In stressful situations, she remains cool, but not unfeeling: she cares about the team and tries to minimize losses.
A professional down to the last detail. She's the type to triple-check her gear, plan, and backup plans. It's important to her that everything goes smoothly.
Reserved, yet caring. She's not one to shower warm words on others, but if one of her people is in trouble, she'll be the first to rescue them. Her style is "perfect geometry of strikes": no unnecessary movements, only those guaranteed to hit the target. Visually, she's very stylish: neat, collected, her movements fluid and abrupt at the same time. In battle, she seems to become part of the rhythm of the battle—and sets that rhythm herself.

Choi Jong-In

Choi Jeong-In is an S-rank hunter and the leader of the Hunter's Guild, one of the strongest in Korea. He is called the "Ultimate Hunter" and "Super Soldier." He is not only a powerful mage, but also a leader who oversees the most dangerous raids. High-level fire magic. Jeong-In is considered the best fire mage in Korea: with a single spell, he can destroy a tall building. "Fire Lance." Creates and launches sharp spears of pure flame—they can pierce even the strongest monster armor. "Fire Dragon." Transforms a whirlwind of fire into a dragon that burns enemies around it. This is his signature move for clearing large groups of enemies. "Fire Prison" (or Barrier). He can surround an area with flames, preventing enemies from entering or exiting. Very useful for isolating a boss or holding back a wave of monsters.
Control over the temperature and shape of flames. He doesn't just "burn everything": he can finely regulate the heat, shape the flames, and extinguish them at will. He's vulnerable in close combat. Like most mages, he has lower physical defense, so in a face-to-face fight, he's weaker than fighters like Cha Hae-In or Baek Yun-Ho. He requires competent support from his team. Cunning and calculating, he calculates the situation several steps ahead and doesn't rush into a fight without a plan.
Confident, but not reckless. His status as guild leader requires it: he doesn't risk people simply for the sake of victory and strives to minimize losses.
A reserved leader. He doesn't shout or throw tantrums, but his orders are followed—he exudes authority.
Practical. He likes to be in control and prefers to operate where he has the advantage (i.e., at a distance, with fire). His style is "artillery and control": he takes an advantageous position and unleashes destructive spells on his enemies. Visually, he's also memorable: a business suit, glasses, and sometimes a cigarette (this even became a small detail in his manhwa). In battle, his eyes glow, and flames swirl around him—a very impressive look.

In addition to ranks, hunters have classes (fighter, tank, mage, healer, assassin, marksman), which determine their role in the team.

In rare cases, during a critical situation, a hunter can experience a "second awakening" and significantly enhance their abilities. A secret history. Behind the Gate's emergence lies a massive conflict between ancient forces. There were the Sovereigns (who were supposed to protect humanity) and the Monarchs (who sought to destroy it). At some point, the Sovereigns used an artifact to rewind time 10 years and opened the Gate—in the hopes that the hunters would gain strength and fight back against the Monarchs. Key figures include the Architect (who created the System and the Statue of God) and Osborn (the Sovereign who ultimately chose Jin-Woo as his successor).
The System. This is the world's main feature. People usually can't level up—their rank is fixed. But Seong Jin-Woo was an exception: after one of his raids, he discovered the game interface. The system gives him quests, and for completing them (killing monsters, fulfilling conditions), he earns experience points, allowing him to level up his stats (strength, agility, intelligence). No one else in the world has this ability, so the hero has to keep it a secret. Guilds. Hunters often form guilds. The guild's prestige depends on the hunters' rank within the guild. A deep mythology. Behind it all lies a massive conflict. Initially, there was the Creator (the Absolute Being), who, for fun, created the Lords (to protect humanity) and the Monarchs (to destroy it). When the Lords rebelled against the Creator, they used an artifact to rewind time 10 years, opened the Gate, and unleashed magic—in the hope that hunters would be able to repel the Monarchs. Dungeons appear through Gates—portals between our world and the magical dimension. Gates serve as entrances, and they remain open until the boss inside is killed. After defeating the boss, the Gates remain open for about an hour, then close themselves. There's a strict rule: the dungeon must be cleared within seven days. Failure to do so results in a "dungeon breach," where monsters escape into the human world and can cause a real catastrophe.

Dungeons have ranks (E to S), and they are directly related to the strength of the monsters and the value of the loot: E-D rank: for beginners and low-ranking hunters. Monsters are weak, the loot is modest. C-B rank: a serious threat, requiring experienced teams. A-S rank: only for strong hunters, often requiring entire guilds. Bosses here can be nearly unkillable without perfect coordination.
Monsters typically increase in strength as you progress deeper into the dungeon, and the boss is always the most dangerous target. Dungeon structures vary greatly, from narrow caves and corridors to vast open spaces and entire "landscapes" within a portal. This influences tactics: tanks and melee fighters perform better in narrow passages, while mages and ranged fighters thrive in open areas. There are also special dungeon types: Red Gates. This is a rare and extremely dangerous variety: once inside, hunters cannot exit until they clear the dungeon or... die. There is no "exit dungeon" button here. Instance dungeons (quest dungeons). Unique to Seong Jin-Woo: they are created by the System as personal tasks or training grounds. They are separate from regular Gates and exist specifically for his quests. Monsters are "mobs". Usually, these are hordes of ordinary enemies that serve as "bait" and test the team's endurance. They can be of different types: fast and weak, heavy and armored, magically dangerous. They are always at the final stage of the dungeon. Bosses have unique abilities, high defense, and often a "phase" mechanic: after losing some health, the boss changes his fighting style and becomes even more dangerous. The main value is mana stones, powerful energy sources. Artifacts, rare materials for weapons and equipment, and sometimes even unique skills or items are also found. Some dungeons have specific tasks: not just killing the boss, but protecting an object, escorting NPCs, activate seals, etc.
Timer and time pressure. The seven-day limit creates tension, and inside the dungeon, hunters often have to act quickly: mana can deplete, traps can activate.

Song Il-Hwan (Song Jin-Woo's father)
Jin-Woo's father disappeared into the dungeon approximately 10 years before the events begin. For a long time, the family didn't even know if he was alive. It later turns out he became a vessel for one of the Rulers, granting him immense power, comparable to that of S-rank national-level hunters. At the same time, he sincerely wants to protect his family and doesn't turn into a villain: even when faced with threats, he acts out of concern for his son.

Park Kyung-hye (Sung Jin-woo's mother)
Jin-Woo's mother is in a coma due to the "Eternal Sleep"—a special condition caused by magic and mana. She's in the hospital, and paying for her treatment is one of the main reasons Jin-Woo continues to go on dangerous raids, even as an E-rank and constantly risking his life. She's a huge incentive for him to become stronger: later, he takes on challenging missions specifically to obtain ingredients for a cure.

Sung Jin-Ah (Sung Jin-Woo's younger sister)
Jin-Ah is a schoolgirl who is very attached to her brother. She understands the dangers of raids and worries deeply about Jin-Woo. At one point, she even says that if her brother can no longer hunt, she will quit school and go to work to support the family. Jin-Woo practically raised her while her mother was in a coma and her father was missing. Their relationship is very warm: she is grateful to him for everything, and he does everything he can to ensure that she lives a peaceful and safe life.
