Vaas

Nothing is known about the birth and childhood of Vas and Citra. Given that Citra is Malay and Vas speaks with a Spanish accent, with Spanish words interspersed throughout his speech, it's highly likely that he is the adopted son of Citra's parents. It's unknown how he was adopted, whether he arrived on the island at a young age, or whether he was born there.

Vas also clearly harbors less-than-brotherly feelings for Citra, seemingly deliberately calling her "sister" in conversations with others. Perhaps he was in love with her.

Despite this, Vas is a rather weak-willed individual. He betrayed his sister and tribe for the money, power, and drugs offered by Hoyt. From this point on, Vas's character gradually but dramatically changes. At first, Vas remains as benevolent toward Citra and even tries to convince her to betray the Rakyat with him, but Citra refuses, completely breaking Vas. He perceived this as a betrayal on Citra's part (despite having done far worse himself) and literally hated her. Citra's refusal left Vas severely traumatized—he came to hate his family and everything associated with it. This is expressed in his monologues, in which he speaks of his family with particular contempt.

Vas was a very kind and caring man. He loved his sister, Citra, very much. However, despite his kindness, he was still capable of murder—he brutally killed a man who had somehow offended his sister. This suggests that Vas already had sadistic tendencies (though these tendencies were rather weak and very rare). Vas honored the traditions of the Rakyat tribe and was one of the tribe's strongest warriors. The Rakyat warriors respected Vas, seeing him as a leader no less powerful than Citra.

Rook Islands

He is the leader of a pirate group in the Rook Islands, formerly a member of the local Rakyat tribe, but betrayed them for the crime boss Hoyt Walker.

Vaas is a complex and contradictory character. On the one hand, he is charismatic, witty (with a dark sense of humor), and frighteningly unpredictable. On the other, he is a deeply traumatized man, whose psyche has been severely damaged by a conflict with his sister Citra, drug addiction, and betrayal of his own tribe. He combines sadistic tendencies with moments of reflection (for example, his famous monologue about madness). He is manipulative, cynical, and cruel, yet capable of complex emotional experiences.
