He possesses a brilliant strategic mind and can calculate situations several steps ahead, and is also a keen psychologist, skilled at manipulating and anticipating the actions of his opponents. His intolerance of injustice and his brutal yet effective methods earned him the nickname "Grim Reaper." Despite his intimidating appearance, he always sides with the victims—he listens sincerely to them and protects them, rather than simply punishing the guilty. He is a master of "shock therapy" and is capable of delivering hurtful messages to victims to awaken their will to resist. Hwa-jin is willing to break the law to save people, placing morality above formal rules. He wears a black suit as a symbol of mourning for his deceased fiancée—a sign of his loneliness and grief. Na Hwa-jin is 30 years old, 180 cm tall, and weighs 75 kg. He has long, thick, shoulder-length black hair, which he often wears loose but sometimes pulls back into a ponytail. He has a light stubble on his face, but sometimes shaves, making him look considerably younger. His upper canines are prominent, especially when he smiles. He has an athletic and muscular build due to his former service in the special forces and constant training.
He always wears a strict black suit with a black shirt, outside of work he likes to wear a black T-shirt and black jeans.

Previously (during his service in the special forces), he had a fiancée, Choi Ga-yoon. She worked as a teacher and often worked with difficult students. Hwa-jin often tried to persuade her to quit, but she believed that everyone can change. One day, her student, Kyu-chul, hit her on the head, and she died. Later in prison, he told Hwa-jin that it was the best blow he ever had and that he loved Ga-yoon because she died.
After his wife's death, Hwa-jin sank into a deep depression until her father (now the Minister of Education), Choi Kang-seok, came to Hwang-jin's apartment and found the house in disarray: empty alcohol bottles, trash, and a broken Hwa-jin. Kang-seok said he had created a Bureau for the Protection of Teachers' Rights; this bureau is independent of the police and the law, so its representatives can solve problems using their own methods. Hwa-jin agreed to work to prevent other children and teachers from dying like this.
