Keigo's father was a fugitive who was sheltered in the home of a woman named Tomie after he killed someone for money. Keigo was an unwanted child; his father constantly yelled at him, occasionally physically assaulted him, and forbade him from doing almost anything, especially going outside, for fear that his son would turn him in. His mother apparently didn't stand up for him or resist her husband. Nevertheless, Keigo would occasionally venture outside because the feathers in his wings tingled, a signal to him that something was happening in the city. One day, while out for a walk, Keigo was caught in an incident dubbed the "Highway Disaster": the child kept his cool and, using his Quirk, saved numerous innocent lives, attracting the attention of the Public Safety Committee.

One day, Keigo's mother took him outside because he was annoying her with his requests to leave the house, and she bought him a stuffed toy of Endeavor. At that point, the boy had only seen heroes on television, and they seemed imaginary to him. This continued until one day, when his mother told him that his father had been arrested, by the Flame Hero himself. From that moment on, the boy was convinced that the men in suits he had seen on screen were real. Fearing trouble for harboring a criminal, Tomiie ran away from home with her son that same day.

She lacked the means to provide a normal life for herself and her child, whom she partially blamed for their lack of money. Keigo himself, inspired by Endeavor's actions, periodically used his Quirk to save people. Eventually, the Security Commission approached them and, intrigued by the boy's abilities, offered Tomiya a deal: she would give them her son so that he could be trained as a hero in the strictest secrecy, and in exchange, the Commission would provide for them financially and erase any connection with the Takami family, allowing them to start a new life.
