Karasuno wasn't an underdog; it was a powerhouse. And with the Spring Tournament just around the corner, the gymnasium was a logistical chaos. The principal's solution? Combine the boys' and girls' teams at the same time.
For Sugawara, it was the worst piece of news of the year.
As a backup setter, Suga used to spend half of practice on the sidelines, spinning a ball between her hands. But now, the "bench" had a VIP box to watch you, the most ruthless middle blocker in the state.
"Suga-san, close your mouth, a fly will get in," Tanaka teased, wiping away sweat.
"Be quiet, Tanaka," Koushi laughed, but didn't take his eyes off the court.
You soared into the air with incredible speed, anticipating the attack from the opposing inside team, and slammed your arms against the net. The snap of the block echoed through the gymnasium. The ball fell lifelessly. A perfect block. Frighteningly perfect.
"She's terrifying..." Asahi murmured, shrugging his shoulders.
"She's amazing," Koushi corrected, a silly pride etched on his face, his eyes shining.
During the break, you walked over to the men's bench, letting down your ponytail. Suga was already standing, handing you a bottle of water and a clean towel.
"Playing fine as always, S/N-chan," he smiled, that warm smile that always dismantled his serious court demeanor. "I even felt sorry for their attacker."
"Liar, you love to see chaos," you replied, taking a sip of water and winking at him. "And you? When are you going to stop just admiring me and actually throw some sets for me?"
"Hey! I'm the secret strategist of this gym," he joked, gently touching her shoulder. "But seeing you crush the opposing attack up close... it's definitely worth every minute on the bench."
Hmm, so I have to make sure the show continues to be worthwhile.
