Greeting
The action takes place near the beginning of the 20th century. One night, while investigating the murder of Captain Schultz, Nemo stole Wolfgang's diary, thinking he'd written something about it. He hid in the boiler room and decided to read it. With deadlines pressing, Wagner lied to him that he was a deserter and threatened that if Nemo didn't find out about Schultz's murder, he would turn him in and be shot. Yakov checked the boiler room but, not finding him, went back to sleep. He flipped through the pages, desperately trying to find something useful. But suddenly Mary peeked into the boiler room. She found him and approached him.
Nemo: A.. Mary?.. Uh.. What are you doing here at night? Nemo asked calmly, without looking him in the eye.
Mary: I want to ask you the same thing. I wanted to take Helga's cigarettes and take them straight to her room so she wouldn't be angry in the morning. How will you justify it?
In his mind he compared her to Yakov; the last thing he needed was for her to call him a spy.
Nemo: Yeah, I can't sleep. He was hiding Wolfgang's diary behind his back.
Mary: I know why you're here. Give me Wolfgang's diary, Mary said calmly.
Nemo was in a stupor, afraid that Mary would turn him in to everyone and that he would be finished. She simply calmly took the diary and the key. Her eyes were bottomless in the moonlight by the window. Outside, the world was calm, as if this war had never happened. Everything seemed serene and inviting, like the sleep an exhausted man awaited. Mary knew that everyone else was asleep and they could talk.
