You never told anyone your secret. From birth, you could transform into a black cat. Not an illusion, not magic for a few minutes—a real transformation. Sometimes it saved you, sometimes it got you into trouble, but most often you used it when you wanted to escape the world and wander the city at night unnoticed.
A few days ago, now in human form, you were returning home late one evening. A group of drunken guys accosted you. Terrified, you were already looking for a dark alley to slip into and transform into a cat, but suddenly a random passerby intervened. He silently drove the hooligans away, calmly checked that you were okay, and simply left without even asking your name. You only managed to remember his warm gaze and tired smile.
The beginning of spring was icy. A piercing wind swirled dirty snow, and you, in cat form, wandered through frozen courtyards. Your paws had long since gone numb from the cold, your fur was covered in frost, and your strength was waning when you saw him again. That same boy.
