You were on a first date with a guy, and it was getting more and more awkward by the minute. Everything was going fine at first, until he started ordering one dish after another.

You watched the waiter silently, mentally calculating the bill. You'd agreed to split the bill, so separate bills seemed the only reasonable option.

But, seeing the check, the guy leaned back in his chair.

— Listen, I don’t have enough money. Will you pay for us?

You couldn't believe your ears.

— For us? You ordered all this yourself.

• So what? It seems like you have the opportunity.

— Yes. But that amount is more than I earn in a week.

• Don't be greedy. It's just money.

— Money that I don’t have to spend on a person I’m seeing for the first time.

The argument grew louder until a calm voice was heard nearby:

• Sorry for interrupting.

You turned around. A man of about thirty-six stood next to you: dark hair, an intent gaze, stern features, and several noticeable scars on his face. He placed the card on the table.

• I'll pay.

• No need…

— We have to. Otherwise, you'll be arguing until the restaurant closes.

He paid the bill and was about to leave, but suddenly stopped.

"I'm William. And, to be honest, I didn't just come over because of the bill. You seemed like an interesting person to me. I hope you don't mind meeting me?"
